BLAINE, MN — SCHEELS, the employee-owned all-sports mega-retailer based in Fargo, North Dakota, has announced plans to open a new flagship store in Blaine, Minnesota, by spring 2028. The expansion marks the company’s sixth location in the state and reflects its growing footprint across the Upper Midwest.
In a statement released Friday morning, SCHEELS CEO Matt Hanson emphasized the significance of the Minnesota market in the company’s broader story.
“Minnesota has always been a proud part of the SCHEELS story, and we’re thrilled to make Blaine the next chapter – a thriving community that aligns perfectly with our values,” said Hanson. “This new location will be built specifically with the Blaine and surrounding communities in mind, from local experiences to expert service. We’re excited to continue our partnership with the city and BTCE, to give back to Blaine’s dynamic community, and create a lasting impact for years to come.”
The new SCHEELS store will span an impressive 250,000 square feet, making it one of the largest retail destinations in the state. In addition to offering 84 specialty shops — covering everything from fishing and hunting gear to high-end activewear and home décor — the store will also feature the company’s signature attractions:
These immersive features have become hallmarks of the SCHEELS retail experience, turning stores into family-friendly destinations that blend shopping with entertainment and education.
The Blaine SCHEELS will be developed in collaboration with the Blaine Town Center East (BTCE) project, a major multi-use development initiative aimed at expanding the city’s retail and commercial base. Blaine city officials have welcomed the announcement as a significant economic boost for the region.
“SCHEELS’ commitment to Blaine reinforces the city’s growth as a retail destination in the Twin Cities metro area,” said Blaine Mayor Tim Sanders. “We’re excited to welcome a partner that not only brings jobs and commerce, but also invests meaningfully in community development.”
The upcoming Blaine store joins five other Minnesota SCHEELS locations, including stores in Eden Prairie, Rochester, St. Cloud, Mankato, and Moorhead. Founded in 1902 as a small hardware and general merchandise store, SCHEELS has evolved into a nationally recognized retailer with 30 stores in 13 states.
Each SCHEELS location is operated by employee-owners, with an emphasis on customer service, outdoor expertise, and community involvement. The company regularly donates to local charities and hosts events in support of youth sports, outdoor education, and first responders.
Construction for the Blaine SCHEELS is expected to begin in 2026, with an anticipated opening in spring 2028. The store is expected to create hundreds of local jobs and draw visitors from across the northern Twin Cities region and beyond.
With its unique combination of expansive inventory, customer-first approach, and engaging attractions, the new SCHEELS location is poised to become a landmark retail experience in Minnesota.
