ST. PAUL, MN (August 1, 2026). Northern Iron plans to permanently close its St. Paul foundry by the end of December, ending operations after years of disputes involving air emissions, state regulators and residents of the Payne-Phalen neighborhood.

The closure represents a major change for an East Side community where residents and environmental advocates have repeatedly raised concerns about pollution and public health.

Years of Regulatory Conflict

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency had been working through a regulatory process involving the foundry’s air permit.

According to information released by state Rep. Liz Lee, agency modeling beginning in 2024 indicated that Northern Iron exceeded standards involving lead and fine particulate pollution.

Northern Iron had challenged state regulatory actions connected with the facility.

The company’s closure announcement changes the immediate permitting dispute, but it does not resolve residents’ questions about past emissions or potential health effects.

Lawmaker Requests Public Report

Lee, who represents part of St. Paul’s East Side, is asking the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to release a detailed report about the foundry’s operations and environmental record.

She wants the agency to explain what is known about emissions violations, how they occurred, what residents may have been exposed to and what work will be necessary to address any continuing pollution.

A public report could help residents distinguish between confirmed findings, regulatory modeling and questions that remain unresolved.

Closure Does Not End Community Concerns

The end of industrial operations could reduce future emissions from the property, but residents and public officials are also seeking information about the years during which the plant operated.

Questions may remain about environmental monitoring, cleanup responsibilities and the property’s future use after the foundry closes.

Northern Iron said operations will end permanently in December.
