MINNEAPOLIMEDIA SPORTS | Gophers Rebound With 41-7 Victory Over Akron Before Big Ten Schedule

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (September 20, 2026). The University of Minnesota football team responded to its first loss of the season with a decisive 41-7 victory over Akron, improving to 2-1 before the start of Big Ten competition.

Minnesota controlled the game defensively and gradually established the running attack that had been missing during the opening weeks of the season.

Freshman Quayd Hendryx gave the Gophers favorable field position with a 42-yard kickoff return. Quarterback Drake Lindsey later connected with Roman Voss for a touchdown as Minnesota built an early advantage.

The Gophers led 20-0 at halftime after holding Akron’s offense in check and turning defensive stops into additional possessions.

Minnesota’s running game became the central development during the second half. The offense recorded 142 rushing yards during a sequence of 12 consecutive running plays, including a 71-yard touchdown by TJ Thomas.

That production mattered beyond the final score. Minnesota had struggled to generate a consistent ground attack earlier in the season, placing more pressure on Lindsey and the passing game. A functional rushing offense can control possession, reduce obvious passing situations and protect the defense during conference play.

Akron’s difficulties increased when starting quarterback Cibastian Broughton left with a knee injury during the first quarter. The Zips did not score until late in the game against Minnesota reserves.

The Gophers’ defense forced repeated punts and turnovers while preventing Akron from building sustained drives. The performance allowed Minnesota to play younger and reserve players after taking firm control.

The victory followed a disappointing loss to Mississippi State and gave the Gophers a needed reset before traveling to Washington for their next game.

Akron did not provide the level of opposition Minnesota will face in the Big Ten. The result nevertheless allowed the team to address weaknesses, establish confidence and enter conference play with a winning record.

The central question moving forward is whether the improved rushing performance can be repeated against a stronger defensive front. If it can, Minnesota will enter the conference schedule with a more balanced offense than it showed during the first two games.
