MAPLE GROVE, MN (September 23, 2026). North Memorial Health representatives have presented Maple Grove officials with new details about the health system’s integration with Sanford Health, including a planned $600 million investment in two Twin Cities hospitals.

During a Maple Grove City Council work session Monday, health-system representatives said $500 million is expected to support an expansion of Maple Grove Hospital. Another $100 million is designated for modernization, deferred maintenance, equipment and facility improvements at Robbinsdale Hospital.

The presentation brought the merger’s potential local effects before city officials after Sanford and North Memorial formally completed their combination September 1. The consolidated nonprofit system operates under the Sanford Health name.

Representatives told council members that pressure on emergency departments, operating rooms and labor-and-delivery services demonstrated the need to expand capacity. They said the investment is intended to provide more care closer to patients’ homes.

The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office entered into a 10-year oversight agreement governing the transaction. Among its conditions, the combined system agreed to maintain core services at Robbinsdale Hospital, preserve its Level 1 trauma center, continue charity care and participation in Medicare and Medicaid, and protect existing union agreements.

The agreement also requires the system not to materially reduce existing Minnesota service lines. It includes commitments covering behavioral health, reproductive care, gender-affirming care and North Memorial’s air and ground emergency transportation operations.

The combined organization says it employs approximately 61,000 people and serves 2.5 million patients through 60 hospitals across the Upper Midwest.

The scale of the promised Maple Grove expansion is consequential for the northwestern metropolitan area, where population growth has increased demand for emergency, surgical and inpatient services. Important details, including the construction timetable, final design and additional capacity, have not yet been publicly finalized.
