MINNEAPOLIMEDIA PRESENTS | This Weekend in the Twin Cities™: The Exhaustive Twin Cities Sunday-Only Directory (October 4, 2026)

Image

The Twin Cities Marathon and Vikings football will reshape travel through Minneapolis and Saint Paul, but Sunday's calendar reaches far beyond the central cities with Anoka's first major Halloween gathering of October, fall festivals, farms, free nature programs, museums, markets, art, fashion and a busy evening concert schedule.

TWIN CITIES, MN (October 4, 2026).

Sunday begins early in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, where thousands of runners, spectators and volunteers will gather for the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, TC 10 Mile and related races before the afternoon brings another large crowd downtown for the Minnesota Vikings' 3:05 p.m. game against the Miami Dolphins.

Those events will affect transportation well beyond the people attending them. Downtown Minneapolis road closures begin before dawn, sections of the marathon route will close through Minneapolis and Saint Paul, and roads will reopen gradually as runners move toward the State Capitol. Anyone heading into either central city should review the race route before leaving home, even when the destination has nothing to do with the marathon.

The rest of the metropolitan area offers a considerably different Sunday.

Anoka begins the city's 106th Halloween festival season with the Great Pumpkin Expo at City Hall while the Anoka County Fairgrounds hosts the final day of its Fall Festival. Ham Lake, Andover, Dayton and Brooklyn Park provide additional farm and harvest choices. Three Rivers Park District has free or low-barrier nature programming in the northwest metro, and Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista is holding a free Fall Fest with live music, farm animals, demonstrations and seasonal activities.

Minneapolis has the opening day of Paris Couture at Minneapolis Institute of Art, free glassblowing demonstrations at Foci Minnesota Center for Glass Arts, Garden Storytime at Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and several major evening concerts. Saint Paul adds Minnesota Children's Museum's First Free Sunday, a free Romanian cultural exhibition opening at Landmark Center, Oysterfest, They Might Be Giants, Journey and additional music.

This Sunday-only edition of This Weekend in the Twin Cities™ removes events that ended Friday or Saturday and rechecks the events that remain. It also restores the contact information that readers need when they are unfamiliar with a venue or encounter a problem while traveling. Where an organizer publishes a telephone number, email address or direct event page, that information is included. Where a public contact could not be verified, the directory says so rather than inventing one.

SUNDAY WEATHER DESK

Sunday offers the best outdoor weather of the weekend.

The latest National Weather Service forecast for Minneapolis calls for sunny skies with a high near 65 degrees and northwest winds around 5 to 10 mph. Sunday night should remain clear, with temperatures falling to around 45 degrees.

That outlook is favorable for the Great Pumpkin Expo in Anoka, the Anoka County Fairgrounds Fall Festival, Gale Woods Farm, the region's pumpkin farms and orchards, and other outdoor activities.

Marathon participants and spectators will experience a much cooler part of the day than the forecast high suggests. The TC 10 Mile begins at 7 a.m. and the marathon at 8 a.m., so spectators expecting to remain outside for several hours should dress in removable layers.

The dry forecast also improves conditions at agricultural attractions, although grass, dirt, gravel and other natural surfaces remain important accessibility considerations regardless of rain.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4

Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon

The Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon begins near U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis and travels through Minneapolis and Saint Paul before finishing near the Minnesota State Capitol.

The marathon is one of Sunday's defining events even for people who never see a runner because road closures affect a substantial corridor between the two cities.

When: Sunday, October 4, 8 a.m.

Course: Minneapolis to Saint Paul.

Finish area: Minnesota State Capitol, Saint Paul.

Spectating: Free.

Race registration: The marathon field is sold out.

Road closures: Downtown Minneapolis closures begin before dawn. Streets along the course close as necessary and reopen on a rolling basis after runners pass.

Transit: Light rail is expected to operate, although multiple Metro Transit bus routes may be detoured.

Accessibility: Spectators requiring an accessible viewing location should review Twin Cities In Motion spectator information before choosing a location.

Weather: Sunny, with a high near 65 degrees. Morning conditions will be considerably cooler.

Website: Twin Cities In Motion official Marathon Weekend and spectator-information pages.

Important to know: Trying to follow the race repeatedly by car is not a practical spectator strategy. Choose a viewing area before leaving home and plan around closures.

TC 10 Mile

The TC 10 Mile begins an hour before the marathon and contributes to the early Sunday closure schedule around downtown Minneapolis.

When: Sunday, 7 a.m.

Start area: Downtown Minneapolis near U.S. Bank Stadium.

Admission for spectators: Free.

Transportation: Anyone entering downtown Minneapolis early Sunday should expect closures to be in effect before the race begins.

MINNEAPOLIMEDIA EDITOR'S PICKS

For a free North Metro outing, the Great Pumpkin Expo in Anoka offers the simplest combination of seasonal atmosphere, family accessibility and cost. Families wanting a longer experience can combine it with the Anoka County Fairgrounds Fall Festival, although the fairgrounds event charges admission.

Gale Woods Farm Fall Fest is Sunday's strongest free full-scale fall destination. The combination of live music, farm animals, sheepherding demonstrations, seasonal activities, free parking and mobility assistance gives visitors enough programming for a substantial outing without an admission charge.

For a low-cost North Metro farm day, Anoka County Farms remains difficult to beat at $5 admission, although visitors must remember that the farm accepts cash only and several activities cost extra.

For families with young children, Minnesota Children's Museum First Free Sunday offers the largest savings relative to regular admission, but only for families who secure the required reservation.

For arts and fashion, the opening of Paris Couture at Mia is Sunday's major museum event. The special exhibition costs $20 for general admission, despite Mia's regular museum admission being free.

For an unusual arts experience that does not require admission, Foci's Glass Pumpkin Patch provides free demonstrations and a chance to watch glass artists create seasonal work.

For sports, the marathon offers free spectating in the morning and Vikings-Dolphins provides the major ticketed afternoon event. Attempting both is possible, but transportation should be planned before leaving home.

Minnesota Children's Museum states that every exhibit is wheelchair accessible. It also offers comfort rooms with lower visual stimulation, noise-reducing headphones, visual timers and universal cuffs. Personal care attendants accompanying the person they assist are admitted free.

Gale Woods Farm provides golf-cart transportation to festival destinations for visitors needing mobility assistance. The service is first come, first served.

Three Rivers Park District says nearly all of its nature programs can be adapted. Available support can include sign-language interpreters, all-terrain wheelchairs, sound amplification and other modifications. The district's accessibility contact is 763-559-9000 or access@ThreeRiversParks.org.

Mia and the major arena and stadium venues maintain established accessibility programs.

Farm attractions require more individual investigation. Grass, dirt, gravel and agricultural surfaces can remain challenging even during dry weather. Anyone whose participation depends on surface conditions should call before purchasing admission.

FAMILY AND AGE DESK

For very young children, strong choices include Minnesota Children's Museum, Gale Woods Farm, Great Pumpkin Expo, Eastman Nature Center and the Glass Pumpkin Patch.

School-age children may find more sustained activity at the Anoka County Fairgrounds Fall Festival, Twin Cities Harvest Festival & Maze, Anoka County Farms and Gale Woods Farm.

Teenagers may be more interested in the major concerts, Vikings football, Paris Couture and larger fall attractions.

The Dream Syndicate at Turf Club is restricted to ages 21 and older.

They Might Be Giants and W.I.T.C.H. are advertised as all-ages performances.

Oysterfest is primarily oriented toward adults, particularly because alcohol is part of the festival.

MARATHON + VIKINGS TRANSPORTATION DESK

Sunday's transportation conditions require more attention than an ordinary events calendar can provide.

Race-related street closures around U.S. Bank Stadium begin before dawn. The TC 10 Mile starts at 7 a.m., followed by the marathon at 8 a.m. Roads along the course will reopen gradually rather than all at once.

Twin Cities In Motion advises motorists to use major interstate routes when moving broadly across the metropolitan area and publishes specific crossing recommendations for sections of the race route.

Light rail is expected to continue operating, while several bus routes will be detoured between approximately 4 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The Vikings begin at 3:05 p.m. at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Vikings themselves are warning ticket holders about marathon-related closures, including downtown Minneapolis restrictions beginning early Sunday.

Saint Paul also requires planning. The marathon finishes near the State Capitol, and road restrictions affect portions of downtown and Summit Avenue before reopening.

The Saint Paul Farmers' Market, Minnesota Children's Museum, Landmark Center, Oysterfest and Grand Casino Arena are all legitimate Sunday destinations, but their normal driving approaches may not be the best approaches during Marathon Weekend.

Visitors should consult the race map before selecting parking.

INDOOR ALTERNATIVES

Sunday's weather should be excellent, but visitors who prefer indoor programming have several substantial choices.

Minnesota Children's Museum

Minneapolis Institute of Art and Paris Couture

Foci Minnesota Center for Glass Arts

Landmark Center

Journey at Grand Casino Arena

They Might Be Giants at Fitzgerald Theater

The Dream Syndicate at Turf Club

Doja Cat at Target Center

W.I.T.C.H. at The Cedar

The major museums and performance venues maintain their own ticketing and capacity limits. Check availability before traveling.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME

Confirm the event one final time with the organizer.

Check the complete address rather than relying only on a venue name.

Save the organizer's telephone number before leaving when one is available.

Open the direct event page and keep it available on your phone.

Check whether admission is actually free or whether only the venue's general admission is free.

Verify ticket availability.

Confirm whether free admission still requires a reservation.

Check age restrictions.

Check accessibility when terrain or seating determines participation.

Review pet rules before bringing a dog.

Bring cash to Anoka County Farms.

Do not assume a daytime farm ticket includes a separate nighttime attraction.

For downtown Minneapolis or Saint Paul, check the marathon course before starting the car.

Vikings attendees should review the stadium bag policy before leaving home.

Concert attendees should confirm the venue's bag, age and re-entry policies.

Visitors unfamiliar with the Twin Cities should avoid building a schedule that requires repeated travel between distant parts of the metropolitan area. A North Metro day, a Minneapolis day, a Saint Paul day or a west-metro day will generally be easier to manage than attempting to collect events from every part of the directory.

THE SUNDAY TAKEAWAY

The final day of the weekend offers enough programming across the Twin Cities that Sunday's major challenge is not finding something to do. It is choosing an outing that fits the people attending, the budget, the transportation conditions and the amount of time available.

The marathon and Vikings game will receive much of the attention in Minneapolis, but neither event needs to define the day for residents elsewhere in the metropolitan area. Anoka has two substantial fall events within the same community. Ham Lake, Andover, Dayton and Brooklyn Park offer farm and harvest attractions. Gale Woods Farm gives west-metro families a free festival large enough to occupy several hours, while Three Rivers Park District provides quieter nature alternatives in Brooklyn Park and the Elm Creek area.

Minneapolis visitors can choose between fashion, glass art, a native-plant garden, professional football and several evening concerts. Saint Paul offers a free children's museum day for families with reservations, a free Romanian cultural exhibition opening, a major farmers market, Oysterfest and multiple evening performances.

The range of choices is only useful when readers can determine whether those choices actually work for them. That requires more than an event name and starting time. A visitor needs to know the complete destination, admission price, registration requirement, age restriction, accessibility conditions, transportation implications and how to reach someone when a problem occurs.

That is why this Sunday edition includes telephone numbers, public email addresses and direct organizer information wherever those details could be verified. When an organizer does not publish a particular contact, the directory identifies the gap rather than leaving the reader to wonder whether the information was overlooked.

Sunday's weather should cooperate. The National Weather Service expects sunshine and a high near 65 degrees, providing favorable conditions for farms, festivals and marathon spectators.

Transportation requires considerably more care. Anyone traveling into Minneapolis or Saint Paul should check the marathon route before leaving, and Vikings ticket holders should allow additional time even for an afternoon kickoff.

Once those practical questions are settled, the final day of the weekend still offers a remarkable range of ways to spend a Minnesota Sunday.
