MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Passenger Fatally Shot Aboard Green Line Train, Gunman Leaves Before Police Arrive

An adult passenger was shot and killed aboard an eastbound Green Line train traveling from Minneapolis toward Saint Paul Saturday night, with police saying the suspected shooter left the train shortly after the gunfire and remained at large in the latest information available.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (October 5, 2026).

Minneapolis police are investigating a fatal shooting aboard a Metro Transit Green Line train after an adult passenger was shot while traveling east from Minneapolis toward Saint Paul Saturday night and the suspected gunman left the train before officers arrived.

The shooting was reported at approximately 9 p.m. aboard a train traveling from the Stadium Village station near the University of Minnesota campus toward Saint Paul. The train subsequently stopped at Westgate Station near University Avenue and Curfew Street, where Metro Transit police and other emergency responders encountered the victim.

Police said the adult victim had suffered at least one gunshot wound. Emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but the victim died at the scene.

The suspected shooter reportedly exited the train shortly after the shooting. No arrest had been announced in the latest information released by Minneapolis police, and investigators were still working to determine what led to the gunfire.

Authorities had not publicly identified the victim in the information available to MinneapoliMedia.

The shooting presents investigators with a crime scene that differs substantially from a shooting on a street or inside a fixed building. A light-rail train moves through multiple jurisdictions and stations, while passengers can board or leave at numerous points. Investigators will have to reconstruct where the victim and suspected shooter boarded, what occurred inside the train before the gunfire and precisely where the suspect left.

The train's location also placed multiple agencies in the response. The shooting occurred while the Green Line was traveling east from Stadium Village in Minneapolis, but the train stopped at Westgate Station, which is in Saint Paul. Metro Transit police were among the first responders, while Minneapolis police are investigating the homicide.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained unclear. Police had not publicly said whether the victim and shooter knew one another, whether an argument preceded the gunfire or whether investigators believe the victim was deliberately targeted.

Those unanswered questions make caution important. The confirmed development is a homicide aboard public transportation, not evidence that passengers generally were targeted or that the shooting was random.

The killing nevertheless creates an immediate security concern for Metro Transit because it occurred inside a train carrying members of the public.

The Green Line is one of the Twin Cities' primary transit corridors, connecting downtown Minneapolis and downtown Saint Paul through the University of Minnesota and neighborhoods along University Avenue. Thousands of passengers use the line for work, school, entertainment, medical appointments and other daily travel.

A homicide inside a train therefore carries consequences beyond the criminal investigation. Metro Transit and local law enforcement will face questions about surveillance footage, police presence, emergency response and whether the suspect can be identified through video from the train, platforms or surrounding stations.

Modern light-rail vehicles and stations operate within an extensive camera environment, potentially giving investigators evidence of the suspect's movements before and after the shooting. Police had not publicly detailed what video evidence had been recovered.

Investigators also had not announced whether a firearm was recovered.

The shooting occurred during an unusually busy weekend for Minneapolis transportation. Tens of thousands of people were moving through the central cities for the Minnesota-Michigan football game Saturday and the Twin Cities Marathon and Minnesota Vikings game Sunday. Stadium Village is immediately adjacent to Huntington Bank Stadium, where the Gophers defeated Michigan earlier Saturday.

Police have not indicated that the shooting was connected to the football game.

The homicide investigation will now depend heavily on witnesses, surveillance evidence and information from passengers who may have seen the victim or suspect before the gunfire.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact investigators or CrimeStoppers.

Until an arrest is made, one of the most important facts remains unresolved: a person was killed inside a Green Line train traveling through the Twin Cities, and the person police believe fired the shot left the train and had not been publicly reported in custody.
