MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Southbound Snelling Avenue Drops to One Lane October 19–23 as Crews Remove Temporary Markings and Restripe Roadway

ROSEVILLE, MN (October 18, 2026). Drivers traveling south on Snelling Avenue through Arden Hills and Roseville will encounter a one-lane restriction beginning Monday, October 19, as crews remove temporary pavement markings and restripe the roadway between Interstate 694 and Highway 36.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation lists daily work hours of 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. through Friday, October 23. Its construction announcement says crews may work longer outside residential areas.

The operation will also temporarily close cross streets while crews are working nearby. MnDOT advises motorists to consider alternate routes and allow additional time for trips through the corridor.

Restrictions Extend Beyond the Morning Commute

The published work window includes the morning and evening commuting periods as well as late-evening travel. Drivers who use the corridor for work, shopping or appointments should account for reduced southbound capacity throughout the day.

Nearby residents and businesses can expect increased noise and vibration during removal of the pavement markings. MnDOT says the work should be less noisy than the corresponding operation on the northbound side.

The announced restriction is a reduction to one southbound lane during the listed hours. MnDOT has not described it as a continuous five-day closure of the entire southbound roadway.

Cross-street access will change as crews move through the work area. Motorists should follow the restrictions posted at each intersection rather than assume a familiar crossing will remain available.

Part of a Larger Highway and Pedestrian Project

The marking work follows a construction season that began in the spring. The broader Highway 51/Snelling Avenue/Hamline Avenue project extends between Highway 36 in Roseville and Grey Fox Road in Arden Hills.

MnDOT’s approximately $7 million project includes pavement repairs and resurfacing, drainage improvements, signal work and replacement of guardrail.

Pedestrian improvements include accessible ramps and audible pedestrian signals at County Roads B2, C and C2, Lydia Avenue and Ramsey County Road E.

The project also includes an east-side sidewalk extension between County Road C and East Snelling Service Drive, along with a west-side trail connection between Lydia Avenue and Snelling Avenue North. The plans remove the uncontrolled pedestrian and bicycle crossing at Hamline Avenue.

Together, those changes address the roadway surface, drainage and connections for people traveling outside vehicles.

Check Conditions Before Traveling

All construction schedules remain subject to weather and other changes. MnDOT also notes that its project webpage is not routinely updated overnight or during weekends.

Drivers can consult Minnesota 511 for current restrictions and review the Snelling Avenue project page for construction information.
