MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | North Minneapolis Food Shelf Introduces Around-the-Clock Food Lockers on West Broadway
Shiloh Cares’ Hope Vault expands pickup access beyond building hours, with an October 21 open house explaining how the system works.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (October 21, 2026). A North Minneapolis food shelf is introducing a new way for neighbors to obtain food when its building is closed.
Shiloh Cares Food Shelf’s Hope Vault food and resource lockers are scheduled to open Wednesday at 1201 West Broadway, Door 3. The opening event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a ribbon cutting planned for 10:30 a.m., according to project leader Pastor Jalilia Abdul-Brown.
The lockers are designed for access at any hour, addressing a practical difficulty for people whose work shifts or family responsibilities prevent them from visiting during regular food-shelf hours.
Abdul-Brown, executive director of Change Starts with Community, explained the pickup process in an October 20 interview with MPR News. Under the planned on-demand system, a person with a cellphone enters identifying and contact information to receive a code that opens a locker.
She said the expansion would allow the organization to serve at least 18 additional neighbors each day. The opening also includes demonstrations of the lockers and tours of the food shelf.
In her public announcement, Abdul-Brown said the lockers would contain rescued food, produce from the organization’s youth-grown Agrihood garden and Minnesota farmers, and other essential resources.
She credited support from Second Harvest Heartland, the Cargill Foundation, Hennepin County, the MacLennan Foundation, the Anthony Family Foundation and Community Emergency Service partners.
The project also connects food distribution with the organization’s youth employment and violence-prevention work. Abdul-Brown told MPR that young people involved in its programming would help stock the lockers.
The food shelf operates within Shiloh Temple International Ministries. Residents attending Wednesday’s opening should use Door 3 at the West Broadway address.
