MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Minnesota Dedicates Highway 610 to Melissa and Mark Hortman, Honoring Their Lives and Public Service

Governor Tim Walz joins legislative leaders and the Hortman family as the state establishes a permanent memorial along a major Northwest Metro transportation corridor.

BROOKLYN PARK, MN (November 7, 2026).

Minnesota has formally designated Trunk Highway 610 as the Hortman Memorial Highway, establishing a permanent public tribute to former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, whose deaths in June 2025 shocked the state and drew national attention to political violence.

Governor Tim Walz joined members of the Hortman family and legislative leaders Friday, November 6, to unveil highway signs bearing the memorial designation.

The tribute places the Hortmans' names along one of the northwest Twin Cities' most important transportation corridors, connecting communities and serving residents who travel between homes, workplaces, schools and businesses.

The dedication comes nearly 17 months after the couple were killed at their Brooklyn Park home in an attack that also targeted other Minnesota elected officials.

A Legacy of Legislative Leadership

Melissa Hortman represented the Brooklyn Park area in the Minnesota House of Representatives for two decades and served as House speaker from 2019 through 2024.

During her legislative career, she became an influential figure in Minnesota politics, helping shape debates over education, transportation, energy policy, reproductive rights and state government.

Her leadership included periods of both divided government and Democratic control of the Legislature.

Hortman was known for her command of legislative procedure and her ability to navigate complicated negotiations.

Her political work was closely connected to the communities she represented in the Northwest Metro.

Mark Hortman, who was not an elected official, was remembered alongside his wife as a member of a family whose lives were deeply rooted in the community.

The memorial recognizes both of them.

Highway 610 and the Communities It Connects

Highway 610 is a significant east-west route through the northern metropolitan area.

It connects portions of Hennepin and Anoka counties and serves communities including Brooklyn Park, Coon Rapids and neighboring suburbs.

For many residents, the highway is part of an ordinary daily journey.

The memorial designation gives that familiar route an additional meaning.

Motorists traveling along Highway 610 will encounter a reminder of two lives lost to violence and the public service associated with the Hortman family.

The designation also places a statewide tribute within the geographic area Melissa Hortman represented.

Remembering Political Violence Without Normalizing It

The killings of Melissa and Mark Hortman raised urgent questions about the safety of elected officials and their families.

The attack also left Minnesota confronting the consequences of politically motivated violence within its own communities.

Public disagreement is a fundamental part of democratic government, but threats and violence against elected representatives undermine the ability of residents to participate safely in public life.

The dedication of the highway cannot undo the harm inflicted on the Hortman family.

It does, however, establish a visible acknowledgment of the lives lost and their place in Minnesota history.

THE TAKEAWAY

The Hortman Memorial Highway is more than a change in road signage.

It connects a major Northwest Metro transportation route to the memory of Melissa and Mark Hortman, whose deaths remain part of Minnesota's recent political history.

For residents of Brooklyn Park, Coon Rapids and surrounding communities, the designation creates a permanent local reminder of public service, family and the importance of rejecting political violence.
