DNR: Most Of Minnesota Facing 'Extreme Fire Danger'

All but two counties in the state are under a Red Flag Warning for fire danger Thursday.

Most of Minnesota is facing ”extreme fire danger” thanks to dry conditions and strong winds.

On Thursday, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources issued a Red Flag Warning for 85 out of Minnesota's 87 counties, with Cook and Lake counties in northeast Minnesota the only ones not under the warning.

The warning indicates that fires can “spread quickly and easily progress out of control under the predicted weather conditions, including gusty winds and low relative humidity.”

The DNR will not not issue or activate open burning permits in counties under Red Flag Warnings, and campfires are discouraged.

Campfires are not allowed in counties with elevated restrictions, including Cook, Koochiching, Lake and the northern half of St. Louis counties.

“When fire risk is this high it’s important to be careful with anything could spark a wildfire,” Karen Harrison, DNR wildfire prevention specialist, said in a statement.
