Minneapolis Police Arrest Six Juveniles In Northeast Carjacking Incident

In a coordinated sting by the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) and its partners, six juveniles were arrested following a violent carjacking in Northeast Minneapolis. According to a recent police report, this incident occurred on February 7th, when a 62-year-old woman was robbed and her vehicle taken as she walked from her car to a residence. The suspects, a gaggle of youths, tackled the victim and fled with her car keys.

The stolen vehicle was detected on February 7th near Plymouth Avenue North and Logan Avenue North, thanks to the aid of some parents who gave the information to the officers. A pursuit ensued, with the State Patrol taking the lead from the air and directing the officers, ensuring that the pursuit was kept at a safe distance. When the juveniles abandoned the car at 8th Av N and Queen Av N and concealed themselves in a neighborhood garage, police secured the area and apprehended all six, aged between 11 and 15, charging them into the Juvenile Detention Center.

MPD Chief Brian O'Hara lauded the collaborative effort. "This was great collaborative work that interrupted the recurring criminal behavior of a group of juveniles," O'Hara said in the statement. He also expressed gratitude towards the MN State Patrol and Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance. Moreover, Chief O'Hara stressed the importance of addressing the systemic issues that often see juveniles repeatedly caught up in criminal activities.

In response to escalating violence involving youth, the MPD Curfew Task Force was instituted in September 2024. They operate with a mandate to make contact with youngsters under 18 during the early weekend hours, striving to engage before curfew kicks in. The Task Force also conducts home visits for repeat juvenile offenders and provides support and resources to their families. It was through these proactive engagements that police obtained timely information from parents, culminating in the recent arrests.
