MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Two Men Wounded in Dinkytown Shooting Days Before University of Minnesota Classes Begin
Police arrested one man carrying a handgun without a permit and recovered several other firearms after gunfire erupted amid multiple disturbances near campus
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (September 7, 2026). Two men were wounded and one man was arrested after gunfire erupted early Sunday in Dinkytown near the University of Minnesota campus, adding a public-safety concern just days before students return for the fall semester.
Minneapolis police said officers were dispatched at approximately 2:41 a.m. to Fourth Street Southeast and 13th Avenue Southeast to assist University of Minnesota police as officers dealt with several disturbances in the area.
While officers were there, they heard gunfire.
Police found two men suffering from suspected gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a hospital, where medical personnel determined their injuries were not life-threatening.
Officers arrested a man at the scene who was carrying a handgun, according to police. Authorities said the man did not have a permit to carry the weapon.
Investigators also recovered several additional firearms from the area.
Police have not publicly said whether the arrested man is believed to have shot either victim, whether the two wounded men knew one another or whether the violence grew out of one of the disturbances officers had already been addressing.
Those distinctions will matter as the investigation continues.
The shooting occurred in the heart of Dinkytown, the commercial and residential district immediately north of the University of Minnesota's East Bank campus. Thousands of students live, work and socialize in the surrounding neighborhood, and the incident comes as the university prepares for the beginning of fall classes.

The two victims were expected to survive based on the most recently available medical information.
Police have announced an arrest for unlawful possession of a handgun, but authorities have not publicly announced shooting-related charges.
The recovery of several firearms does not by itself establish who fired them or how each weapon was connected to the incident. Investigators will need to determine which firearms were discharged and who possessed them.
