MINNEAPOLIS, MN (October 31, 2026).

Welcome to the Weekend!

Halloween has finally arrived, and for once, the calendar has cooperated with the children.

October 31 falls on a Saturday this year, which means there is no school-night argument about how late everyone can stay out. Unfortunately for parents, that also means the negotiations may begin earlier and last considerably longer.

Across Minnesota, costumes are being adjusted, candy bowls are being filled, and at least one adult is discovering that the elaborate costume ordered online requires assembly instructions, three batteries and a degree in engineering.

Then there is the weather. Minnesotans have learned that a Halloween costume is rarely complete until someone asks whether a winter coat can fit underneath it. This year may offer a little relief from that familiar challenge, although nobody should mistake a mild October afternoon for a guarantee about the evening.

Fortunately, the weekend has much more to offer than trick-or-treating.

Anoka, Minnesota's Halloween Capital of the World, concludes another season of celebrations with a citywide scavenger hunt, decorated homes and downtown activities. Coon Rapids offers family-friendly Halloween programming, while Brooklyn Park, Stacy and other North Metro communities provide opportunities ranging from outdoor recreation to wildlife education.

Minneapolis welcomes the return of Festival de las Calaveras, the annual celebration of Latino music, art and Día de los Muertos traditions. BareBones Productions concludes its Halloween Extravaganza at Powderhorn Park. Saint Paul offers indoor trick-or-treating, LEGO creations, live music, ballet, markets and museum experiences.

Bloomington hosts the Minnesota Bat Festival, where visitors can learn about animals that have spent centuries being unfairly blamed for frightening people. The Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley concludes its Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, and communities across the region are preparing for Día de los Muertos observances on Sunday.

There is also one final weekend gift.

Daylight saving time ends early Sunday morning, giving everyone an additional hour. Parents of small children should probably avoid making elaborate plans for that hour until they have consulted the children.

Welcome to the expanded Saturday edition of This Weekend in the Twin Cities™, MinneapoliMedia's weekly guide to the people, places, activities and experiences that make Minnesota's communities worth exploring.

WEEKEND WEATHER AND TRAVEL ADVISORY

Saturday, October 31

Halloween conditions across the Twin Cities are expected to be relatively mild for the season, although clouds and the possibility of passing showers remain worth watching.

Families planning outdoor activities should bring layers and prepare for cooler conditions after sunset. Those attending outdoor performances, including BareBones at Powderhorn Park, should consider an extra layer, weather-resistant clothing and suitable footwear.

Sunday, November 1

Relatively mild conditions may continue into Sunday, but visitors should check the latest National Weather Service forecast before setting out.

This weekend's weather guidance is regional rather than a newly confirmed hour-by-hour forecast. Readers should consult the National Weather Service for current temperatures, precipitation probabilities and advisories.

Traffic, Parking and Public Transportation

Expect increased activity around downtown Minneapolis, downtown Saint Paul, the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, Mall of America and the Minnesota Zoo.

Festival de las Calaveras may also affect traffic near Lake Street and Minnehaha Avenue in Minneapolis.

Visitors attending downtown events should allow additional time for parking and consider public transportation where practical.

Useful travel resources:

Don't Forget the Clock

Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, November 1. Clocks move back one hour.

All event times in this guide are Minnesota local time. Saturday is Central Daylight Time, and Sunday is Central Standard Time.

NORTH METRO COMMUNITY COVERAGE NOTE

The Saturday directory includes Coon Rapids, Anoka, Brooklyn Park, Ham Lake and Stacy, along with an additional Sunday outing in Anoka.

Public event information for Columbia Heights, Fridley, Blaine and some neighboring communities did not establish additional qualifying October 31 or November 1 events during this research pass. Those communities have therefore not been assigned invented events or dates.

Readers looking for activities in those cities may also consult their municipal parks and recreation departments, public libraries and community calendars.

BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT

A good weekend begins with enthusiasm, but a little practical planning can make the difference between a pleasant outing and an afternoon spent negotiating with a parking meter.

For families with young children, check age restrictions before purchasing tickets. The Minnesota Zoo's Saturday Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is for adults only, while Sunday's closing night welcomes families.

For Brick Cities, tickets are tied to timed sessions. For BareBones, visitors should dress for an outdoor performance and bring suitable seating. For Festival de las Calaveras, remember that the outdoor celebration and indoor ticketed performances have different admission arrangements.

Some activities are free but require advance registration. Saint Paul's Skyway Trick-or-Treat, for example, encourages families to register ahead of time.

For neighborhood celebrations, be respectful of private property and participating residents. When visiting Anoka's decorated homes, use the organizer's guidance and avoid blocking driveways.

If you are traveling between Minneapolis, Saint Paul and the suburbs, build enough time into your schedule for traffic, parking and the occasional unexpected stop.

And remember that the children may have very different priorities from the adults. You may be interested in the cultural significance of a community festival. They may be interested in whether anyone is distributing chocolate.

Both interests can coexist.

THE TAKEAWAY

Halloween weekend demonstrates how much of Minnesota's community life depends on people who create opportunities for others to gather.

In Anoka, generations of residents have helped establish a Halloween tradition recognized across the state. In Minneapolis, artists and volunteers continue the work of BareBones, bringing puppetry, performance and community storytelling into a public park.

Festival de las Calaveras and the Día de los Muertos gatherings taking place throughout the weekend offer opportunities to honor family histories and celebrate cultural traditions that remain important to Minnesota's Latino communities.

The Minnesota Bat Festival introduces children and adults to wildlife conservation through activities designed to make learning enjoyable. Brick Cities encourages creativity across generations, while neighborhood trick-or-treating events bring families into contact with local businesses, parks and community organizations.

These activities differ in size, cost and purpose, but they share something important. They make public life more accessible and give residents reasons to experience communities beyond their immediate neighborhoods.

That matters in a metropolitan area as large and diverse as the Twin Cities.

A family from Coon Rapids might spend Saturday afternoon exploring downtown Anoka. Someone from Minneapolis might discover a wildlife education program in Stacy. Visitors from Saint Paul might attend a cultural celebration on Lake Street and leave with a better understanding of the traditions being observed.

Not every meaningful experience requires a major event or an expensive ticket.

Sometimes it is a neighborhood walk, a museum visit, a conversation with an artist or a child discovering something new.

The best weekend is not necessarily the one with the most activities.

It is the one that gives people something worth remembering.

EDITOR'S NOTE

At MinneapoliMedia, we believe a good weekend should come with plenty of possibilities, a little adventure and, preferably, fewer arguments about where everyone wants to go.

This Weekend in the Twin Cities™ is our way of helping you discover the people, places, celebrations and experiences that make Minnesota's communities worth exploring. Whether your plans involve a concert, a neighborhood festival, a family outing or simply convincing everyone to leave the house before noon, we hope this guide makes the decision a little easier.

Event schedules, admission prices and ticket availability can change, sometimes faster than a Minnesota weather forecast. We encourage readers to check directly with organizers before heading out, especially for outdoor activities, advance reservations and special accessibility arrangements.

Most importantly, enjoy yourself. Support local artists, visit a neighborhood you have never explored, introduce someone to a new experience and remember that not every weekend needs an elaborate itinerary to become a good memory.

And if your carefully planned Saturday somehow turns into three unexpected stops and dinner somewhere nobody originally suggested, well, that sounds like a fairly successful weekend to us.
