MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Coon Rapids Announces Free Document-Shredding Event for Anoka County Residents as November Recycling Programs Continue
Coon Rapids will host a free document-shredding event November 7, offering Anoka County residents an opportunity to securely dispose of personal papers.
COON RAPIDS, MN (November 1, 2026).
Anoka County residents will have an opportunity to dispose of sensitive personal documents at no charge next Saturday when the Coon Rapids Recycling Center hosts a community shredding event intended to support secure document disposal and responsible recycling.
The event is scheduled for November 7, from 9 a.m. until noon, or until the shredding truck reaches capacity.
It will take place at the Coon Rapids Recycling Center, 1827 111th Avenue NW.
The service is available to all Anoka County residents, not only people living within Coon Rapids city limits.
Participants may bring up to five boxes of paper documents.
According to the city's published instructions, documents will be placed into collection carts and transferred to a mobile shredding truck, where they will be destroyed on site using a cross-cut shredding system.
The process reduces paper into small pieces and offers residents a more secure disposal method than placing intact documents in ordinary household trash or recycling bins.
Secure disposal is particularly important for records containing financial information, account numbers, addresses and other personal details.
Documents that are no longer needed can create unnecessary exposure to identity theft if they are discarded without appropriate precautions.
The shredding event provides an accessible option for residents who do not own a paper shredder or who have accumulated large quantities of records.
The city has simplified the preparation requirements.
Residents do not need to remove ordinary paper clips, staples or rubber bands before arriving.
Documents may remain inside envelopes, and paper files do not need to be separated from folders.
Checkbooks may also be submitted without removing individual checks.
However, certain materials are not accepted.
Three-ring binders, credit cards and compact discs are excluded from the shredding program.
The five-box limit is intended to help distribute the available service among participants and manage the capacity of the shredding truck.
Residents should also be aware that the event may conclude before noon if the truck becomes full.
That possibility makes arriving earlier in the scheduled period advisable, particularly for households bringing several boxes.
Once documents have been transferred for shredding, residents may recycle their empty cardboard boxes at the Recycling Center.
The event is part of Coon Rapids' broader waste-reduction and recycling services.
Those programs help residents manage materials that require different disposal methods from ordinary household garbage.
The city's recycling center also provides information about organics collection and other programs intended to reduce waste.
Document shredding is a relatively simple service, but it addresses two practical concerns.
The first is privacy.
Households routinely accumulate records from banks, insurers, healthcare providers, employers and other institutions.
Although some records must be retained for legal, financial or personal reasons, documents that are no longer required should be discarded carefully.
The second concern is environmental management.
Paper that is securely shredded and processed through an appropriate recycling system can be diverted from ordinary waste disposal.
The city has not announced an attendance estimate for the November 7 event, and the amount of material collected will depend on participation and available truck capacity.
Residents who plan to attend should review their documents in advance to avoid accidentally destroying records they may need later.
They should also separate materials that are not accepted and prepare no more than the permitted five boxes.
For older adults, families managing household records, and residents handling accumulated paperwork, the event provides a convenient opportunity to reduce clutter while taking reasonable precautions to protect personal information.
The service also reflects the role of local government in providing practical programs that may receive less attention than major development or policy decisions but directly affect everyday household needs.
The November 7 event is scheduled to serve residents throughout Anoka County.
Additional information is available through the City of Coon Rapids and its Recycling Center.
