Brooklyn Center-Based CEAP Sees Spike In Food Shelf Visits

March is an important month for local food shelves which take part in the Minnesota FoodShare campaign. For CEAP in Brooklyn Center, the campaign comes at an important time as the nonprofit’s food shelf experiences a rise in visits.

“Visits to Minnesota food shelves hit a record high in 2022 and CEAP continues to see an increase in first-time visitors to our food market,” said Katy Briggs, communications and development manager with CEAP. “For neighbors who were already living paycheck to paycheck, inflation is an ongoing crisis.”

For CEAP, the goal is to raise $200,000 and collect 150,000 pounds of food by April 9.

Like other food shelves, CEAP has experienced a surge in visits as government pandemic-related assistance programs ended.

“As pandemic support programs like Emergency Snap come to an end, CEAP is our community safety net and it’s here to fill that gap, but we need our community support to do so,” said Briggs.

CEAP has partnered with businesses and local churches for “Stuff the Truck” events that collect donations of nonperishable food. The nonprofit shares about 500,000 meals each month through its food assistance programs.
