A union that represents thousands of Cub Foods employees in the Twin Cities has authorized a strike as they push for higher wages.
United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Union Local 663 said during a meeting held on Tuesday that 94.5% of its members voted in favor of the strike. Over 3,000 workers are represented by the union.
Union representatives say the initiative is focused on raising wages for all full-time and part-time employees as part of new contract negotiations. The next bargaining session is expected to be held on Friday with a 10-day grace period until a strike is launched, if deals aren't agreed upon by both parties.
At a news conference Wednesday, union members said they have been working without a contract since early March.
The union has proposed a two-year increase of $4/hour for full-time employees, including a $2 raise in Year 1 and a $2 raise in Year 2. Cub reportedly countered with a $2.75/hour increase; $1.50 for the first year and $1.25 for the following year.
