Construction To Begin On New Hindu Temple In West Metro

A new place of worship is under construction just west of Plymouth. The Hindu temple, formally called a Mandir, will become a place for community, service and worship.

Right now, the space at 1432 Hamel Road is just an empty lot. Beginning Saturday, it will transform into a temple for the BAPS Hindu denomination.

Currently, the local BAPS congregation meets in a former Salvation Army building in Brooklyn Center.

Outreach Coordinator Hiren Desai said the project is entirely funded and supported by volunteers. He is excited for what the temple will become for the public.

“Mandir serves as a facility where like-minded people with similar values come together and they can pursue a common purpose,” Desai said.

The space will have classrooms, a gymnasium and a worship space.

Anyone is welcome to attend the groundbreaking on Saturday, July 6. It goes from 9-11:30 a.m. at the site on Hamel Road. Leaders ask that you RSVP on its website.

The Medina temple has been in the works for two years. Desai hopes it will open in two years once they break ground.

Maple Grove also has a temple in its city, operated through the Hindu Society of Minnesota.
