Minnesota State Rep. Nolan West spoke with ABC Newspapers about the experience of witnessing his daughter’s alleged abuse at Small World Learning Center Daycare.
The individuals, Elizabeth Weimerslage and Chloe Johnson, were are facing charges of three counts of malicious punishment of a child, and one count of third degree assault of a child under four.
West’s whose three-month old child attened the daycare, found out from a Facebook post that the two teachers who are now facing criminal charges, were the ones taking care of his baby the entire time.
West reported that they had been getting tons of incident reports as this was happening, and that his wife had obtained photos.
“You never in a million years think this will happen to an immobile child,” West exclaimed.
After the Blaine Police Department had submitted the Wests’ pictures as evidence, they met with the Midwest Children’s Resource Center, where they stated that the pictures were consistent with abuse. West added that their daughter, being three months old, did not regularly bruise.
“I want people to know that any bruise on an immobile child is serious,” West stated.
West reported that the bruise on his daughter’s right shin had been 2 inches long and 1 inch wide.
“If your child is not moving, they should not be bruising,” West said. “... We learn as first time parents about shaking a baby, but not about actual abuse. That will do so much good, to just remind people about it.”
West stated that both the Blaine Police Department and Midwest Children’s Resource Center Director Dr. Mark Hudson MD had never seen any case like this in their career.
West commented that when he and his wife took their daughter in, Hudson approached them and talked to them about the matter as consolation.
