Coon Rapids, MN — July 3, 2025
A significant renovation of Anoka County’s Passport and License Center in Coon Rapids is set to proceed in 2025, thanks to a strategic reallocation of $200,000 within the county’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
At its most recent meeting, the Anoka County Board of Commissioners approved a mid‑year budget adjustment that directs these funds toward essential improvements at the center located at 455 99th Ave NW. The facility processes thousands of passport applications, driver’s license renewals, and Real ID requests each year.
“We are committed to delivering outstanding public service,” said Board Chair Mike Gamache, who presides over the seven‑member board. “These renovations will enhance both efficiency and accessibility for residents, while updating facilities that support our staff’s vital work.”
County staff indicate the renovation will include refurbishing the interior layout, modernizing signage and digital service kiosks, enhancing ADA‑compliant counters, and upgrading security and technology infrastructure to streamline high‑volume services.
The CIP—a component of the county’s annual strategic infrastructure planning—allocates funding based on facility needs and population growth. This funding shift reflects continued high demand for passport and licensing services following a post‑pandemic increase in international travel and ongoing Real ID compliance efforts.
Construction work is anticipated to begin in fall 2025, with the county planning to minimize any impact on daily operations. Adjusted appointment scheduling and notifications about walk-in disruptions will be communicated via Anoka County’s official website and social media channels before construction commences.
