Second Annual Walk For Alopecia Planned For Becker Park

The second annual Walk for Alopecia is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28, at Crystal’s Becker Park. Organizers hope it raises awareness and welcomes conversation about the disease.

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that causes hair to fall out. Organizer Leslie Johnson said she set up last year’s walk for her young daughter, and this year is even bigger.

She said many people approach her daughter with good intentions, but she wants them to know sometimes those interactions can be uncomfortable.

“If you have a question or a comment, and it’s a stranger– maybe just pause for a second and think: is this something that person can change in 30 seconds or less? If not, you might want to hold that comment or question to yourself,” Johnson said.

This year’s walk is the official walk site for the Twin Cities.

More than 200 people are signed up to attend the walk, and more are welcome. The event goes from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, with the walk beginning at 10:30 a.m.

There will be face painting, food trucks and activities for families to connect.
