Medica Closes Minnesota-Based HQ After UnitedHealthcare CEO's Killing

Its offices will be closed temporarily through at least Dec. 13

Following the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City, insurance company Medica has temporarily closed its headquarters in Minnesota, citing safety concerns.

Medica have confirmed to local media outlets that it is closing its corporate office and campus buildings on Minnetonka's Carlson Parkway temporarily through at least Dec. 13.

"The safety of Medica employees is our top priority, and we have increased security for all of our employees," the statement said.

"Although we have received no specific threats related to our campuses, our office buildings will be temporarily closed out of an abundance of caution. Like other insurers, Medica also has removed from our website the bios of its executives, for the same precautionary reasons."

It comes as the nation's largest health insurers increase their security following the apparent targeted killing of Thompson, with the shooter reportedly leaving shell casings at the scene that read "deny", "defend" and "depose", an apparent reference to how insurer's avoid paying claims.

Among the actions taken by Medica is temporarily removing details of its company executives, with the Medica website automatically redirecting users back to its homepage, with several other insurance companies taking similar measures. While video of the shooting, photos of the shooter, and a $10,000 reward have been offered for his arrest, the manhunt for Thompson's killer continues, with no reports of a suspect being found.
