Wreaths Across America Event At Fort Snelling

The event is on Saturday at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

MINNEAPOLIS — Thousands of veterans are being honored this weekend at Fort Snelling.

A crowd of volunteers placed nearly 17 thousand remembrance wreaths on graves, continuing a powerful tradition that pays tribute to those who've served our nation.

Wreaths Across America began with a ceremony Saturday morning at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Community volunteers then walked around the site to find headstones, say the names of the fallen heroes and lay the wreaths, which stay in place for up to six weeks.

"It's really sobering to see that there's this many," said Tracy Timp, who joined her husband in placing wreaths by the headstones of his parents. "It's beautiful and real reverent here."

Local volunteer groups including the Daughters of the American Revolution supported the set-up efforts. Nancy Adomeit, who leads a local chapter, said, "You're proud. I think it's a pride in all these men and women that gave their lives the ultimate."

Fort Snelling is one of the largest cemeteries in the country with 260,000 veterans buried there.

The event is hosted by The People's Patriot Project nonprofit. Click here for more information on how to donate.
