Attention Coon Rapids residents and commuters: the Minnesota Department of Transportation is gearing up to widen Highway 10, adding a third lane in both directions from Round Lake Boulevard to Hanson Boulevard. Starting Monday, March 31, the project will kick off, provided Mother Nature plays nice. Kent Barnard of MnDOT warns of "single lane traffic in either direction throughout the summer," as reported by the Coon Rapids government website.
With construction comes the inevitable hassle for drivers. Barnard urged motorists to be patient, noting that "You're going to encounter some congestion from the construction from the lane closures." Undoubtedly, this will translate into longer travel times, so residents should add a buffer to their schedules when hitting Highway 10. Additionally, anticipate periodic ramp closures at Round Lake Boulevard and Main Street. Barnard informed that they won't be closed continuously but expect them to be inaccessible for extended periods.
However, it's not all about wider roads—MnDOT is also focused on constructing noise barriers to shield locals from the clamor of the highway. Detailed maps on the MnDOT website pinpoint two noise walls slated for the south side of Highway 10, with another to the north. These structures promise some relief to those whose daily lives hum with the backdrop of relentless traffic.
For those seeking the latest information on the project's developments, MnDOT will keep the public updated via their website. "We will be providing updates on the closures and on the traffic restrictions up here on our website," Barnard stated. For real-time notifications, signing up for email alerts is the way to go. "That's going to be the best way for people to find out what's happening out here," said Barnard. If the weather cooperates, MnDOT predicts a wrap on the bulk of the construction by November 2025.
