Coon Rapids City Council Approves Public Safety Grant, Site Plan Extension, And Council Chamber Tech Upgrade

August 5, 2025 | Coon Rapids, MN — The Coon Rapids City Council met Monday evening to approve several city business items ranging from public safety funding and infrastructure payments to local business concerns and technology upgrades.

The meeting opened with the pledge of allegiance and roll call before the council swiftly approved minutes from its previous session on July 15.

Consent Agenda Highlights

Councilmembers unanimously passed the consent agenda, which included:

  • A temporary liquor license for the Coon Rapids North Star Alliance in support of an upcoming military softball tournament at Sand Creek Park.
  • Acceptance of a Crime Victim Services Grant from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
  • An approved security contract with Anoka-Ramsey Community College.
  • Receipt of a gambling expenditure report for the first half of 2025.
  • A site plan extension for the Tronson Reserve housing development.
  • Final payment to Northwest Asphalt Inc. for a completed full-depth reclamation street project.
  • Receipt of the city's electronic payment report for July 10–30.

Business Items

One of the evening’s more debated topics was a request from Chanticlear Pizza to reduce their false alarm fees. The restaurant’s representative described ongoing technical issues with their security system. While some council members expressed concern about setting a precedent, others cited the business’s good-faith efforts to resolve the matter. A motion passed to cap the fee at $125 per occurrence, with Councilmembers Geisler and Butler voting against.

In a move aimed at enhancing city transparency and accessibility, the council approved a $133,538.72 technology upgrade for the Council Chambers. The project includes new monitors, a projector, a sound system, and a 10% contingency. Staff said the upgrade will improve audio and visual quality for both attendees and live stream viewers.

The council also introduced an ordinance to restrict parking on 89th Avenue, citing safety concerns at a skewed intersection near an elementary school bus route. A public hearing and vote are expected at the next meeting.

Community Engagement

During the public comment session, a resident praised the city’s sponsorship of the recent Sustainability Garden Tour, noting increased attendance and the importance of native gardening for local pollinators.

Mayor Jerry Koch closed the meeting by reminding the public of the upcoming National Night Out and encouraged residents to participate in strengthening community ties.

The meeting adjourned at approximately 51 minutes after it began.
