Calling all volunteers: The largest annual community service event in Minneapolis is almost upon us, and it's your chance to make a significant contribution to the beauty and well-being of our city. The 31st annual Minneapolis Earth Day Clean Up is set for Saturday, April 19, from 9:30 am to 12 pm, and everyone's invited. The official announcement states there is no need for pre-registration; simply pick a site, show up at the said time, and get to work.
Since the event's start in 2008, it's become a striking example of community spirit, with over 23,000 residents contributing to remove more than 165,000 pounds of garbage from parks across the city. Bags, gloves, and disposal of the collected materials are provided by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and the City of Minneapolis Solid Waste and Recycling. To plan your day, a flyer with a map of all Minneapolis Earth Day Cleanup sites can be found through the aforementioned link.
For volunteers wondering about logistics, the announcement details come handy. On the day of the cleanup, parking will not be enforced at Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) meters and lots until 1 pm. Parents should note that children are welcome to participate but must have adult supervision. And if you come across items that are too heavy or sharp, you're instructed to notify site coordinators instead of handling them personally.
"You are welcome to volunteer for any amount of time that fits your schedule," the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board assures. Those who can't make it on April 19 but wish to organize a cleanup of their own are encouraged to connect with the City of Minneapolis for supplies and support at any time during the year.
