Brooklyn Park Fire Chief: New Station 2 Could Begin Construction This Year

Brooklyn Park Fire Chief Shawn Conway said ground could be broken later this year on a new Fire Station #2 on the western end of the city campus on 85th Avenue North. He will formally ask city council to open the bidding process for construction at a meeting in May.

Firefighters gear up to respond to a call from Fire Station #2 in Brooklyn Park in October 2023.

“We’re really looking at aspects of access to this area,” said Conway. “How do we integrate a fire station into the community and open that up so people feel welcomed here, as well as what are the next stages of the Community Activity Center, and how do we make this a more inviting and accessible area?”

The city will use bonding to pay for the construction.

Conway said two years ago, a community survey showed overwhelming support for a new fire station. He said he wants to improve the health and safety of the department’s employees, wants to reduce call times by more centrally locating apparatus bays relative to living quarters, and improve the city’s response to a growing field of emergencies. He said the current facility has outdated air handling systems and needs new carpet, as well as updated fitness accommodations for the firefighters.
