Brooklyn Park Teen Dies In Northtown Mall Shooting, One Suspect Detained

BLAINE, MN – June 7, 2025 – A 15-year-old Brooklyn Park resident, Sudais Abdi Omar, has been identified as the victim in a fatal shooting that occurred Friday evening in the parking lot of Northtown Mall in Blaine. The incident, which prompted a temporary lockdown of the shopping center, is currently under investigation by the Anoka County Sheriff's Office with assistance from Blaine police.

Authorities responded to reports of shots fired at approximately 5:15 p.m. on Friday, June 6, in the mall parking lot, specifically near the Best Buy outlet store. Upon arrival, first responders found Omar suffering from a gunshot wound. Lifesaving measures were initiated at the scene before the teenager was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing three males fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting. Law enforcement officers were able to apprehend one of the individuals, a 20-year-old man, who is currently being held on suspicion of aiding an offender. Formal charges have not yet been filed, and authorities are actively searching for the remaining two suspects.

The Anoka County Sheriff's Office and the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office are leading the ongoing investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting. Officials have stated that there is no continuing threat to the public at the mall.

This tragic event marks another instance of violence at Northtown Mall in recent years. In September 2024, shots were fired in the mall parking lot following an altercation, resulting in glass blown out of an entrance door. One man was charged in that incident. Additionally, in May 2024, a carnival held in the mall's parking lot was shut down by police after a large group of juveniles engaged in fighting, leading to attacks on multiple officers and a subsequent mall lockdown.

The Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department, Allina paramedics, and police departments from Spring Lake Park, Fridley, Columbia Heights, Coon Rapids, and Lino Lakes also responded to Friday's incident.
