🕊️ IN LOVING MEMORY OF SPEAKER EMERITA MELISSA HORTMAN

A Legacy of Service. A Life Cut Short.

Minnesota mourns the loss of a steadfast public servant, community pillar, and champion of democratic values.

A Light Goes Out In Minnesota

In the early hours of Saturday, June 14, Minnesota’s heart stopped.

Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were tragically killed in what law enforcement believes was a targeted political act of violence. Earlier on there was a reported shooting at the house of Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, both of whom were also shot multiple times and are currently hospitalized in critical condition after undergoing emergency surgery.

“Today, the sun has gone down in Minnesota. We lost one of our finest.” — Governor Tim Walz

Melissa Hortman’s influence on Minnesota politics was deep and transformative. Known for her brilliance, calm resolve, and passionate advocacy, she served as a moral and legislative compass for the state. She was only the third woman to become Speaker of the Minnesota House and remained a respected leader long after.

“She woke up every day determined to make this state a better place. She is irreplaceable.” — Gov. Walz

A Trailblazer Remembered

Representing Brooklyn Park and Coon Rapids since 2005, Melissa Hortman became a legislative powerhouse. She led on climate, equity, education, and democracy protection—never shying away from hard fights or complex compromise. Her career was rooted in conviction and compassion.

“She had a spine of steel and a heart full of grace,” said Rep. Huldah Hiltsley. “She mentored and lifted up so many of us. We are her legacy now.”

A Life Devoted to Service

A Woman of Principle, A Leader of Compassion

Melissa’s sudden death alongside her husband Mark—a beloved teacher and quiet force behind her public work—leaves a profound void in Minnesota. The couple shared a deep partnership in life and in values. They are survived by their children and extended family, and mourned by the entire state.

Prayers for Senator John Hoffman and Wife Yvette

As the state grieves this devastating loss, thoughts and prayers also turn to Senator John Hoffman (DFL–Champlin/Coon Rapids) and his wife Yvette, both of whom remain in critical condition following the same shooting. After emergency surgery, their road to recovery remains uncertain.

“We hold Sen. Hoffman and Yvette in our hearts today. We are praying fervently for their full and swift recovery,” said Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan.

Sen. Hoffman, Chair of the Senate Human Services Committee, has long served as a voice for vulnerable Minnesotans, especially those with disabilities. The Hoffman family is deeply loved in their community, and the outpouring of support has been overwhelming.

A Legacy That Endures

In her final public remarks, Speaker Emerita Hortman quoted Dr. King:

“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

She added, “And it bends only if we keep our hands on it.”

Her life was a testament to that truth. And though she is no longer with us, her legacy will shape Minnesota for generations.

🕯️ IN MEMORIAM AND IN HOPE

We honor the life and leadership of Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark.
We stand in prayerful support of John and Yvette Hoffman.
We reject violence, recommit to public service, and cherish those who lead with courage.
