MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN — Thousands of mourners gathered today to pay their respects to State Representative Melissa Hortman, 55, and her husband, Mark Hortman, 58, as a solemn procession carried their remains from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office in Minnetonka to a funeral home in Minneapolis. The couple were tragically killed in a politically motivated home invasion on June 14, an act that has deeply shaken the state of Minnesota.

The formal procession, which began around 4:00 PM, traveled primarily along I-494 North and I-394 East to the Washburn-McReavy Davies Uptown Chapel in south Minneapolis. Law enforcement vehicles led the somber motorcade, followed by family members and close friends, as citizens lined overpasses and roadsides, many holding signs of remembrance or simply standing in silent tribute.

Melissa Hortman, a DFL powerhouse, had served in the Minnesota House of Representatives since 2005, including a distinguished tenure as the 61st Speaker of the Minnesota House from 2019 until her death. Colleagues and constituents alike remember her as a fierce advocate, known for her sharp intellect, compassionate leadership, and ability to navigate complex legislative challenges. She was instrumental in passing key liberal initiatives, including free school lunches for public school students, and had recently worked to bridge divides in a closely split legislature.

Mark Hortman, a professional engineer, was a bedrock of support for his wife's career. Described by those who knew him as "a kind and generous soul," Mark was known for his quiet strength, his love of the outdoors, and his passion for hobbies like mountain biking and playing pool. He earned a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of North Carolina and an MBA from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management in 2011. He was a valuable member of the Twin Cities-area team at nVent, a company providing electrical solutions.

The couple's four-year-old golden retriever, Gilbert, was also gravely injured in the attack and later humanely euthanized by their adult children, Sophie and Colin. Gilbert, originally a service dog in training through the nonprofit Helping Paws, became a beloved family pet due to his exceptionally friendly nature. His playful barks and appearances in legislative Zoom meetings brought levity to many.

Authorities have charged Vance Luther Boelter, 57, with two counts of second-degree intentional murder for the killings of the Hortmans. Prosecutors have indicated they will seek first-degree murder charges, which carry a mandatory sentence of life without parole. Boelter is also accused of shooting and injuring State Senator John Hoffman, 60, and his wife, Yvette, at their Champlin residence just hours before the attack on the Hortmans. Investigators have revealed that Boelter, who allegedly posed as a police officer, had a "hit list" containing the names of approximately 45 state and federal elected officials, including prominent Democrats and abortion rights advocates. Federal charges against Boelter include stalking and murder, with authorities describing the incident as a "political assassination."

Governor Tim Walz ordered flags to be flown at half-staff statewide in honor of the victims, emphasizing that the act was “an attack on our democracy and our decency.” Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan spoke to the profound personal loss, stating, "Mark and Gilbert were constant presences in Melissa’s life and gave her the strength to lead with courage. We will miss them dearly."

Sophie and Colin Hortman, in a heartfelt statement, expressed their devastation and heartbreak, remembering their parents as "the bright lights at the center of our lives." They encouraged the public to honor their parents' memory by simple acts of kindness, such as planting a tree, visiting a park, or "pet[ting] a dog. A golden retriever is ideal, but any will do."

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, from 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM on the steps of the State Capitol in St. Paul, where a growing memorial of flowers, cards, and American flags has been established. Funeral arrangements for the Hortmans are expected to be announced in the coming days.

As Minnesota continues to mourn, the outpouring of grief and support underscores the deep impact Melissa and Mark Hortman had on countless lives, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to community and a profound belief in the power of service.
