Durango, Mexico Firefighters Drive Over 2,000 Miles To Seal Sister City Partnership With Anoka County

In a show of dedication and international goodwill, a delegation of firefighters from Durango, Mexico traveled more than 2,000 miles in late July to Anoka County, Minnesota, to formally establish a new sister-city relationship with their Minnesota peers.

The visit—covered by CTN Coon Rapids —culminated in a ceremonial agreement signing that unites fire departments from the two regions.

The agreement was solidified during the visit in late July, by Arturo Golindo, the fire coordinator for the state of Durango, with Anoka County Fire Protection Council's Fire Chief John Piper.

The partnership aims to strengthen ties through training exchanges, shared best practices, equipment donations, and ongoing cultural engagement.

Officials on both sides underscored the significance of this alliance, noting that such relationships go beyond symbolic gestures. By forging direct links between fire departments, the partnership opens the door for practical cooperation in emergency response, enhanced professional development, and deeper cross-cultural understanding.

Scenes from the visit included badge exchanges, fire station tours, and community gatherings, underscoring the camaraderie between the teams. The Durango delegation’s cross-continental drive was widely viewed as a testament to their commitment to building a lasting, hands-on relationship.

Local leaders say this agreement reflects the shared values of service, bravery, and public trust that define the firefighting profession, regardless of borders. As the partnership develops, both communities anticipate not only professional growth but also the strengthening of international friendships.
