Coon Rapids, MN – August 2025 – Construction is well underway across Coon Rapids for the city’s 2025 infrastructure projects, including street reconstruction, trail improvements, sewer upgrades, and regional transportation enhancements. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about schedules, traffic impacts, and safety notices as work continues throughout the city.
Street Reconstruction Project 25-1
Approximately 3.9 miles of residential streets are being reconstructed in the Oaks of Shenandoah (north of 131st Avenue between Coon Creek Boulevard and Shenandoah Boulevard), Thousand Oaks (south of Main Street, west of Olive Street), and Thrush Park (south of Main Street, generally west of Shenandoah Boulevard). Northwest Asphalt Inc. is the contractor overseeing the work.
Final wear course pavement for the Oaks of Shenandoah and Thrush Park neighborhoods (Areas 1 and 2) is scheduled for the week of September 8. Residents in these areas are advised to run irrigation systems and contact the city with any concerns. In Thousand Oaks (Area 3), crews are installing new concrete curb and gutter and patching driveways along 124th Lane and adjacent cul-de-sacs. Notices are being provided in advance to inform residents about on-street parking during construction. Residents with medical needs requiring driveway access should contact City Inspector Jason Huebscher.
Miscellaneous City Trails Project 25-3
Trail reconstruction continues in Sunrise Pond Park, Al Flynn Park, Rockslide Park, and along the Riverview Trail segment between Xavis Street and Direct River Drive. Work is expected to continue through the end of August 2025.
Sewer Lining Project 25-4
The city is lining 36-inch sanitary sewers along Mississippi Boulevard and portions of Hanson Boulevard. The project involves temporary above-ground bypass pumping, which may cause short-term traffic detours. Construction began in August, with completion anticipated by early September. Pavement and turf restoration will follow later in the month.
Coon Creek Regional Trail Pedestrian Bridge Project 24-6
Ames Construction continues work on a new pedestrian bridge over Coon Rapids Boulevard northwest of Zilla Street. Construction of the bridge abutment piers, approach spans, and retaining walls is ongoing, with completion expected by the end of October 2025.
Anoka County and MnDOT Projects
Anoka County is performing milling and overlay work on Northdale Boulevard and University Avenue, along with traffic signal replacements at key intersections. Residents can access weekly updates online or contact Construction Supervisor Chris Osterhus at 763-324-3189.
MnDOT is expanding US Highway 10 between Creek Meadow Drive and Round Lake Boulevard, adding a third lane in each direction to improve traffic flow and safety. Construction began in March 2025 and is progressing on ramps, shoulders, and other preliminary infrastructure. Updates and notifications are available on MnDOT’s project page.
