Coon Rapids City Attorney’s Office Secures $70,000 State Grant To Support Victim-Witness Specialist

COON RAPIDS, MN — The Coon Rapids City Attorney’s Office will continue its critical victim-witness services thanks to a $70,000 state grant awarded by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Office of Justice Programs (OJP).

On August 4, 2025, the Coon Rapids City Council unanimously adopted Resolution 25-87, formally accepting the grant. The funds will sustain the city’s Victim-Witness Specialist position, a role dedicated to guiding crime victims and witnesses through the complexities of the legal system.

According to the grant contract (Agreement No. A-CVS-2026-CR-107), the award covers the period from October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2026, and is earmarked for prosecutor-based crime victim services. The $70,000 allocation will ensure the continuation of direct services such as:

  • Informing victims of their rights under Minnesota law.
  • Assisting with court appearances and victim impact statements.
  • Facilitating communication between victims, witnesses, prosecutors, and law enforcement.
  • Providing referrals for counseling, advocacy, interpreter support, and other essential resources.

Since 2017, OJP funding has enabled the Coon Rapids City Attorney’s Office to maintain this dedicated position, which often provides services beyond what the city’s regular operating budget can cover. The grant’s renewal reflects ongoing state support for ensuring victims’ voices are heard and their rights protected in the justice process.

The Coon Rapids City Council highlighted the importance of this funding during its Aug. 4 meeting, emphasizing the city’s commitment to a justice system that is accessible and responsive to victims.
