Burnsville, Minn. — September 14, 2025 — A Sunday afternoon crash in Burnsville caused widespread disruption after an SUV struck a utility pole, bringing down high-tension power lines across County Road 42 and onto several vehicles.
Authorities reported that the crash occurred around 1 p.m. near the intersection of Burnhaven Drive and County Road 42. The impact knocked down multiple power lines, which fell across the roadway and into a nearby parking lot, landing on at least six vehicles.
The City of Burnsville closed County Road 42 between I-35W and County Road 5, along with several nearby side streets, including Irving Avenue, Burnhaven Drive, Aldrich Avenue, and West 141st Street. Traffic signals in the area were knocked out by the power outage, worsening congestion and backups throughout the afternoon.
City officials urged motorists to avoid the area while crews worked to clear the roadway and restore service. Burnsville Fire Chief BJ Jungmann said the closure was expected to last several hours. Roads were reported to have fully reopened by about 10 p.m. Sunday.
The outage forced many nearby businesses to close temporarily. The Burnsville library shut down for the remainder of the day, and as a precaution, a nearby Target store was evacuated. Other businesses in the busy commercial corridor along CR 42 were also affected.
Emergency crews, including electrical utility teams, worked through the afternoon and evening to secure the downed lines, restore power, and reopen the roadway. While significant property damage was reported, including power lines on parked vehicles, it remained unclear Sunday whether the crash resulted in any injuries.
