Coon Rapids Police Explorers Program Opens Doors for Youth Interested in Law Enforcement

The Coon Rapids Police Department is inviting young people to learn more about careers in law enforcement through its Police Explorers program, which is designed for youth ages 14 to 20. The program, associated with the Boy Scouts of America, offers participants a unique opportunity to develop maturity, leadership, and self-confidence while working alongside sworn police officers.

Program Overview

Police Explorers receive hands-on training in a wide range of law enforcement scenarios, including burglary response, assaults, domestic disturbances, and building searches. In addition to training, the Coon Rapids Police Explorer’s Post participates in the annual Minnesota State Explorer Conference each spring in Rochester, where posts from across the state compete in law enforcement skill events.

Requirements for Participation

To be considered for the program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be between 14 and 20 years old
  • Maintain a C average or better in school
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Participate in weekly meetings
  • Be willing to volunteer for community events

An online application is available through the City of Coon Rapids website. All applicants must successfully complete the background check before acceptance.

Upcoming Information Session

For those interested in joining, an informational session will be held on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 7:00 PM in the Coon Rapids City Hall Council Chambers (11155 Robinson Drive NW). The session will provide details about the program, the application process, and what participants can expect as members of the Explorer Post.

The Coon Rapids Police Explorers program continues to serve as an important bridge for youth considering careers in law enforcement, offering real-world experience while fostering community engagement and personal growth.
