Minneapolis, MN — A mass shooting late Monday morning near the I-35W & Lake Street Station left five men injured, according to Minneapolis police. The gunfire erupted around 11:10 a.m. near East Lake Street and Stevens Avenue, in the Lyndale neighborhood close to the busy transit hub.
Incident Details
Police said one man was found on a walkway near the transit center suffering from “very serious” life-threatening injuries, reportedly to the head and neck. Three other men sustained survivable gunshot wounds — two located inside the transit center and one near Stevens Avenue.
A fifth victim, grazed by a bullet, refused medical treatment at the scene. The four other victims were transported to area hospitals, including Hennepin Healthcare in downtown Minneapolis and North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale.
Investigators believe “a few dozen” shots were fired. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said officers recovered two distinct sets of discharged shell casings at the scene. While some witnesses reported shots coming from a vehicle, police said that account has not been corroborated. The majority of the gunfire appeared to originate from the Midtown Greenway.
As of Monday evening, no arrests had been made.
Police Response and Investigation
Chief O’Hara acknowledged the confusion surrounding the event, citing conflicting reports and emphasizing that video evidence and forensic analysis are underway. He said authorities are working to determine whether the victims were specifically targeted or caught in the crossfire.
“This is a deeply concerning incident in a location that has already been the subject of safety concerns,” O’Hara said.
City leaders underscored that the area around Lake Street and I-35W has long been a trouble spot, plagued by violent crime, drug activity, and public safety challenges. The shooting marked at least the fourth in that immediate area within the past month.
In response, Mayor Jacob Frey directed city staff to coordinate with the Minnesota Department of Transportation to temporarily fence off the walkway near the transit center to improve safety and curb ongoing issues.
The Monday morning shooting was followed less than 12 hours later by another mass shooting at a homeless encampment in the Longfellow neighborhood, where eight people were wounded, underscoring Minneapolis’ continued struggles with gun violence.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward as the investigation continues.
