SAINT PAUL, Minn. — November 3, 2025 — Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL–St. Paul) has been honored by the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA) for her steadfast leadership in protecting the integrity of the state’s Fire Safety Account, a fund that supports essential firefighting operations, training, and emergency response across Minnesota.
Murphy received the MSFCA Legislative Award on Monday during a presentation ceremony held at Fire Station 7 in St. Paul, attended by more than a dozen MSFCA leaders and public safety officials. The award recognizes her legislative efforts to stop the diversion of funds from the Fire Safety Account to unrelated purposes — preserving resources that sustain Minnesota’s career, part-time, and volunteer firefighters.
“Being recognized by Minnesota’s firefighters, who literally put their lives on the line every day for people across the state, is a profound honor,” said Majority Leader Murphy. “It is easy to support the important work that our firefighters do because the high-risk, lifesaving work they do is fundamental to the safety and well-being of Minnesotans and communities across our state.”
The Fire Safety Account plays a critical role in public safety statewide. It funds the Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education, Statewide Response Teams such as Hazmat and the Minnesota Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue Team, as well as the Air Rescue Team and the State Fire Marshal’s Office. These entities provide training, equipment, and rapid response capabilities vital to emergency preparedness and community protection.
The Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association, which represents fire service leaders across the state, presents its Legislative Award annually to policymakers who demonstrate outstanding commitment to advancing public safety and supporting fire service operations. According to the association, maintaining the integrity of the Fire Safety Account ensures Minnesota’s first responders have the resources they need to respond effectively to emergencies.
Murphy, who represents Senate District 64 in St. Paul, became Senate Majority Leader in early 2025. Throughout her tenure, she has emphasized investments in public safety, community resilience, and workforce training as legislative priorities — including efforts to strengthen collaboration between state agencies and local fire departments.
The MSFCA’s recognition underscores the growing emphasis within Minnesota’s legislature on protecting dedicated safety funds and ensuring they remain targeted toward life-saving operations rather than being redirected to non-emergency uses.
Founded in 1873, the MSFCA serves as the leading professional organization for fire chiefs and emergency service leaders across Minnesota. The association works closely with lawmakers, state agencies, and local departments to advance fire prevention, training, and emergency management.
