COON RAPIDS, Minn. — The City of Coon Rapids is continuing its citywide fall street sweeping program, which will run through Thanksgiving as crews make multiple passes across neighborhoods to clear streets of debris, sand, and dirt before winter. Each area will be swept two to three times, ensuring a thorough citywide cleanup.
To help crews work efficiently, city officials are asking residents to keep waste and recycling bins, basketball hoops, and other personal items behind the curb and out of the street during sweeping operations.

“Sweepers are designed to collect sand and dirt — leaves lessen that capacity for our sweepers,” the city stated in its public notice.
Residents are reminded that it is against City Code to brush or blow leaves, grass clippings, or other yard waste into the street, as these materials can clog storm drains and reduce the effectiveness of the sweeping process.
Because sweepers refill their tanks using fire hydrants, residents may notice temporary brown or discolored water during the process. The city explained that this occurs when hydrant use stirs up iron sediment in the water system — a harmless but sometimes unsightly effect.
While the water remains safe to drink, residents are advised to avoid washing white clothing if discoloration appears. The issue usually clears within a day, and using a water softener may help remove any residual tint.
City officials thanked residents for their patience and cooperation as the fall street sweeping program continues. The effort not only improves roadway safety and appearance but also helps protect stormwater systems and local waterways from pollution.
