MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Coon Rapids Promotes Sustainability Through Earth Month Initiatives, Highlights Adopt-a-Drain Program
COON RAPIDS, MN (April 23, 2026) The City of Coon Rapids is observing Earth Month with a series of weekly sustainability initiatives organized by the Coon Rapids Sustainability Commission, aimed at increasing environmental awareness and encouraging practical actions among residents.
The month-long program is structured around weekly themes that provide guidance on reducing waste, improving energy use, and protecting natural resources. This week’s focus highlights the Adopt-a-Drain program, a volunteer effort designed to improve water quality by keeping neighborhood storm drains clear of debris.
Weekly Earth Month Topics
The city’s Earth Month programming includes the following themes:
Week 1: Plant a Tree. The initiative emphasizes the environmental benefits of urban tree coverage, including improved air quality, shade, and support for local ecosystems. The city supports this effort through its annual Arbor Day tree sale, which offers residents access to native trees and plants.
Week 2: Electrify. This theme provides information on transitioning household systems and appliances from fossil fuel sources to high-efficiency electric alternatives, supporting long-term energy reduction goals.
Week 3: Make a Swap. Residents are encouraged to reduce consumption by exchanging reusable items such as clothing, garden tools, and household goods through local swap events.
Week 4: Adopt a Drain. The program asks residents to clear leaves, trash, and debris from storm drains in their neighborhoods. Storm drains discharge directly into local waterways without treatment, meaning pollutants carried by rainwater runoff can enter lakes and rivers. Keeping drains clear helps reduce pollution and prevent localized flooding.
Week 5: Compost Food Scraps. The city promotes its organics recycling program, which provides residents with information on composting food and paper waste to produce nutrient-rich soil and reduce landfill use.
Adopt-a-Drain Program
The Adopt-a-Drain program is part of a broader regional effort to protect water quality. Participants voluntarily maintain a nearby storm drain by removing debris on a regular basis. Environmental agencies note that runoff from streets and lawns often carries pollutants such as fertilizers, salt, and litter directly into waterways through these drains.
Statewide participation in Adopt-a-Drain programs has resulted in the removal of significant amounts of debris, helping to reduce contamination and improve stormwater system performance.
Residents can register for the program online and select a drain in their neighborhood. Maintenance typically requires short, periodic cleanings throughout the year.
Sustainability Awards
As part of Earth Month activities, the Sustainability Commission also presents annual Sustainability Awards recognizing residents, businesses, and community organizations for environmental stewardship.
Recent honorees have included local community groups and organizations involved in food rescue efforts, sustainable landscaping, reuse initiatives, and solar energy adoption.
