It is a homecoming.
On Thursday, July 2, alumni spanning six decades of Cardinal history will return to Coon Rapids for the annual Coon Rapids High School All-School Reunion, one of the most enduring traditions associated with the city's larger Fourth of July Community Celebration.
Held adjacent to the Coon Rapids Ice Center, the reunion has evolved into far more than an alumni gathering. It has become a living snapshot of the city's history, bringing together generations of residents whose lives intersected through a school that has served the community since the early 1960s.
This year's reunion will run from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. under a large tent near the entertainment stage beside the Coon Rapids Ice Center, 11000 Crooked Lake Boulevard NW. Admission is free.
Organizers expect hundreds of graduates to attend, continuing a tradition that routinely draws alumni ranging from members of the school's earliest graduating classes to recent graduates beginning their professional and family lives.
The event will once again feature live music from City Knights, with sponsorship support provided by Shortstop Coon Rapids, a longtime supporter of the reunion.
For many attendees, however, the music serves primarily as a backdrop for something more meaningful: reconnecting with classmates, teachers, teammates, neighbors, and friends whose lives have dispersed across Minnesota and beyond.
Some reunions celebrate a single graduating class.
The Coon Rapids All-School Reunion celebrates an entire community.
For one evening each summer, graduates from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s occupy the same space, sharing stories that collectively tell the history of one of Minnesota's largest suburban communities.

One of the reunion's most anticipated customs unfolds at the registration table.
As alumni arrive, they sign in according to their graduation year, allowing organizers to track attendance by class.
What began as a simple registration process has evolved into a friendly annual competition for bragging rights.
Recent attendance champions include:
2025: Class of 1975
2024: Classes of 1969 and 1974 (tie)
2023: Classes of 1972 and 1980 (tie)
2022: Class of 1983
The attendance contest has become a source of spirited rivalry among alumni, with graduates often encouraging former classmates through social media, phone calls, and personal outreach in the weeks leading up to the reunion.
Organizers say the challenge helps sustain engagement across generations while reinforcing the reunion's larger purpose of reconnecting people who share a common history.
The unofficial goal for 2026 is simple: dethrone the reigning champions and bring out enough classmates to claim the title.
Historically, the event has attracted more than 400 graduates representing nearly every era of the school's existence.
Many classes also coordinate informal mini-reunions within the larger gathering, and anniversary classes often reserve dedicated tables to create central meeting points for classmates.
The annual reunion reflects the remarkable growth story of both Coon Rapids High School and the city it serves.
When Coon Rapids experienced rapid suburban expansion during the post-World War II decades, the school became one of the community's defining institutions. Generations of residents passed through its classrooms, athletic programs, performing arts groups, student organizations, and extracurricular activities.
Today, many alumni who first met as classmates remain connected through family ties, businesses, civic organizations, churches, and volunteer activities throughout the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
The reunion provides a rare opportunity to bring those overlapping networks together in one place.
For some attendees, it is an opportunity to reconnect with lifelong friends.
For others, it is a chance to meet fellow Cardinals from entirely different generations and discover how shared experiences continue to link residents decades apart.
The reunion's timing is no accident.
Organizers intentionally schedule the gathering as the opening-night centerpiece of the broader Coon Rapids Fourth of July Community Celebration, one of the largest annual events in the city.
The community celebration runs from July 2 through July 4 on the Boulevard Plaza grounds surrounding the Ice Center complex and attracts thousands of residents each year.
Because the reunion takes place within the larger festival footprint, alumni can move seamlessly between reunion activities and the city's Independence Day events.
That integration has helped make the reunion a uniquely community-centered experience rather than an isolated alumni event.
As former classmates reconnect, families can also enjoy the larger festival atmosphere unfolding around them.
One of the most visible traditions of the holiday celebration arrives on the same evening as the reunion.
The annual Coon Rapids Fourth of July Parade is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, following a route from approximately 111th Avenue NW and Mississippi Boulevard toward the Ice Center area.
The parade annually draws large crowds and features community organizations, local businesses, public safety agencies, youth groups, elected officials, veterans organizations, and civic leaders.
Throughout the three-day celebration, visitors can also enjoy:
• Carnival rides and midway attractions
• Food vendors and festival concessions
• Community exhibits and activities
• Live entertainment
• Family-focused programming
Another longstanding tradition is Firefighter Bingo, which supports the Coon Rapids Fire Department Relief Association and has become a popular gathering point during the festival.
The holiday weekend also includes athletic events designed to bring residents of all ages together.
On the morning of Saturday, July 4, runners and walkers will participate in the 10th Annual Firecracker 5K Run/Walk, while younger participants can join the Sparkler Dash, a free event for children ages 3 through 10.
The activities reflect the broader mission of the city's Independence Day celebration: creating opportunities for residents to gather across generations and backgrounds while celebrating community.
That same spirit is reflected in the All-School Reunion itself.
While many communities host class reunions, relatively few maintain a tradition that welcomes every graduating class into a single shared event.
The result is an evening that often feels less like a reunion and more like a community-wide family gathering.
The three-day celebration will conclude on the evening of Saturday, July 4, with the city's annual fireworks display.
The show is expected to begin at approximately 10 p.m., launching from the Ice Center grounds and serving as the traditional finale to the community celebration.
For many alumni returning to Coon Rapids, the fireworks mark the conclusion of a weekend filled with memories both old and new.
For city residents, they represent the closing chapter of one of the community's most cherished annual traditions.
And for the hundreds of Cardinals expected to gather beneath the reunion tent on July 2, they provide a reminder that while years may pass and lives may take people in different directions, some connections remain remarkably durable.
Every summer, those connections bring generations of graduates back to the place where many of their stories first began.
