The closure began at 10 p.m. Friday and is scheduled to remain in effect until 5 a.m. Monday, July 20.
All entrance and exit ramps along I-494 between Highway 100 and Highway 77 are also closed.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation is directing motorists to use Highway 100, Highway 62 and Highway 77 as the primary detour. Drivers should anticipate heavier traffic and longer travel times on the detour route and nearby local roads.
Construction may produce elevated noise during daytime, nighttime and overnight hours.
The ramp from Portland Avenue to westbound I-494 is also closed through 5 a.m. Monday. Drivers are being directed to use American Boulevard and Penn Avenue.
Several local streets around the construction zone remain reduced to one lane or closed as work continues through Richfield, Bloomington and Edina.
MnDOT said access to businesses and residences will be maintained, but drivers may need to approach their destinations from different directions.
The work forms part of the multiyear I-494 improvement project intended to address congestion, aging infrastructure, safety and mobility along the corridor.
Motorists should consult Minnesota 511 before traveling because schedules may change because of weather or construction conditions.
