MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Blaine Police Officer Injured After Driver Allegedly Flees DWI Investigation in Corvette

BLAINE, MN (September 22, 2026). A Blaine police officer was injured Monday afternoon after a driver suspected of impairment allegedly accelerated away while the officer was partially inside the driver’s vehicle, throwing the officer onto the pavement before the vehicle overturned in a nearby parking lot.

Police were called at approximately 2:32 p.m. to a property-damage crash near Jefferson Street Northeast and Northtown Drive.

Witnesses reported that the driver of an older-model Chevrolet Corvette had been driving recklessly before the crash, according to information released by Blaine Deputy Police Chief Joe Gerhard. The first officer to arrive observed signs that led police to suspect the driver was impaired.

During the investigation, police said the driver began walking back toward the Corvette despite being ordered to stop. The driver entered the vehicle as the officer attempted to remove him.

The Corvette was shifted into reverse while the officer’s upper body remained partially inside, police said. Witnesses reported that the vehicle accelerated rapidly backward, stopped abruptly and then surged forward at a high speed.

The movement threw the officer from the car. The Corvette continued moving through the parking lot before striking a retaining wall and overturning.

Officers from Blaine, Fridley and Spring Lake Park responded to the incident, along with the Minnesota State Patrol and the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.

The injured officer and the driver were transported to a hospital. Police said the officer was treated and released. Neither the officer nor the driver was immediately identified.

After receiving medical treatment, the driver was taken to the Anoka County Jail.

Blaine police said the case could result in charges that include criminal vehicular operation causing great bodily harm, driving while impaired, fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, assaulting a peace officer and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Formal charges had not been filed when police released the information. The allegations remain subject to review by prosecutors, and the driver is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The investigation remains active.
