Coon Rapids Launches Annual Fall Street Sweeping Program, Issues Brown Water Advisory
COON RAPIDS, Minn. — The City of Coon Rapids has officially launched its 2025 Fall Street Sweeping Program, a citywide effort aimed at clearing sand, dirt, and debris from roadways ahead of winter. According to an October 28, 2025, announcement from City of Coon Rapids Local Government, the sweeping initiative will continue until Thanksgiving, with every street in the city scheduled to be swept two to three times to ensure a thorough clean-up. Residents Urged to Keep Streets Clear
City officials are requesting residents’ cooperation to help street maintenance crews complete the program efficiently. Residents are asked to keep waste and recycling bins, basketball hoops, and other items behind the curb and out of the street on sweeping days.
In addition, the city is reminding homeowners that it is against City Code to sweep or blow leaves, grass clippings, or other yard waste into the street. Yard debris can clog storm drains and hinder the street sweepers’ ability to collect sand and fine particles effectively.
“Leaves and grass clippings reduce the efficiency of sweepers and can lead to clogged catch basins,” officials said, emphasizing that community cooperation is critical to maintaining clean, safe, and efficient roadways.
Temporary Brown Water Possible After Hydrant Use
The city also issued a brown water advisory related to hydrant use during sweeping operations. Sweepers refill their onboard water tanks using local fire hydrants, which can stir up iron sediment in the pipes and cause temporary brown or discolored water in nearby homes.
While the discoloration may appear alarming, the City of Coon Rapids confirms the water remains safe to drink. The issue typically resolves within a day. Residents are advised to avoid washing white clothing until the water clears and may use water softeners to reduce discoloration.
Citywide Commitment to Maintenance and Safety
This annual sweeping initiative is part of the city’s broader commitment to maintaining public safety, stormwater quality, and overall neighborhood appearance. Clean streets help reduce pollutants entering storm drains and local waterways, supporting the city’s environmental protection goals.
City crews will make multiple passes through each neighborhood, so streets missed during the first sweep will be revisited later in the program.
