COON RAPIDS, MN (July 3, 2026) Residents planning trips to the Coon Rapids Recycling Center over the Independence Day holiday weekend will need to make alternative arrangements after city officials announced a temporary closure of the facility in observance of the Fourth of July holiday.

The City of Coon Rapids said the Recycling Center, located at 1827 111th Avenue NW, will be closed on Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4. Because the facility is routinely closed on Sundays and Mondays, the holiday schedule effectively creates a four-day shutdown before normal operations resume.

The Recycling Center is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, July 7, at 9 a.m., returning to its regular spring and summer operating schedule.

The temporary closure affects one of the city's most frequently used environmental services, where residents recycle household materials, properly dispose of items that cannot be placed in curbside recycling bins, and participate in reuse and waste-reduction programs designed to keep reusable materials out of landfills.

Once the facility reopens, it will resume its seasonal operating hours, which are in effect from April through September:

  • Tuesday: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Thursday: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Friday: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Sunday and Monday: Closed.

Beyond accepting traditional recyclable materials, the Recycling Center provides several specialized services that extend well beyond curbside recycling.

Among the facility's most popular amenities is the Reuse Room, where residents may donate or pick up usable household products at no charge. The program accepts items such as paint, household cleaners and other products that remain in usable condition, allowing them to be redistributed rather than discarded.

The center also serves as an organics recycling drop-off location, giving residents an opportunity to recycle food scraps and other compostable materials as part of broader efforts to reduce the volume of waste entering landfills.

Additional collection services include designated drop-off areas for appliances, electronics, automotive antifreeze, fluorescent light ballasts, residential sharps and other specialty materials. Some items are accepted free of charge, while others require disposal fees based on the type of material being recycled.

Residents can also take advantage of the center's self-service paper shredding station, which allows secure disposal of sensitive documents. The service is generally limited to one box of paper per visit.

City officials encourage residents planning post-holiday visits to separate recyclable materials before arriving to help reduce wait times and improve traffic flow through the facility.

The Recycling Center serves as an important component of Coon Rapids' environmental sustainability efforts, providing residents with safe disposal options for materials that require specialized handling while promoting recycling, reuse and responsible waste management throughout the community.

A complete searchable A-to-Z guide of accepted materials, current disposal fees and recycling programs is available through the City's official Recycling Center webpage. Residents with questions may also contact the Recycling Division at 763-767-6485 during normal business hours.
