COON RAPIDS, MN (July 7, 2026)
For many families, one of the biggest challenges of summer is finding activities that are affordable, convenient, and engaging for children once school is out. In Coon Rapids, city officials are once again addressing that need by bringing recreation directly into neighborhoods.
The City of Coon Rapids' Rec on the Spot program has returned for its annual summer season, transforming neighborhood parks into temporary recreation hubs where children can participate in organized games, sports, crafts, and other supervised activities—completely free of charge.
Running June 15 through Aug. 13, the Parks and Recreation initiative serves youth ages 5 through 14 and requires no registration, membership, or participation fee, allowing children to simply arrive during scheduled program hours and join the activities. The mobile recreation model is designed to eliminate many of the barriers that often prevent families from accessing summer programming, including transportation, registration deadlines, and cost.
"This program is really about meeting families where they are," the City's Parks and Recreation Department explains on its program information page. Rather than asking residents to travel to a central facility, recreation staff rotate among neighborhood parks throughout the week, bringing equipment, organized games, and structured activities directly into the community.
The program is made possible through the sponsorship of CharitAble MN, whose financial support allows every activity to remain free for participants. City officials say the partnership helps ensure that children throughout Coon Rapids have opportunities to stay active, build friendships, and enjoy safe outdoor recreation during the summer months.
Unlike traditional summer camps, Rec on the Spot operates as a drop-in program. Children may attend as often or as little as they choose without prior enrollment.
Parents and guardians should note, however, that City recreation staff supervise participants only during scheduled program hours. No supervision is provided before activities begin or after they conclude, and families remain responsible for transportation to and from each location. The City also observes an Independence Day holiday break, meaning the program does not operate on July 1 or July 2.
Throughout the season, the mobile recreation unit follows a consistent weekly schedule, bringing activities to parks across different parts of the city.

One notable addition this year is the Wednesday evening stop at Lions Park, expanding the program's reach to families who may be unable to participate during daytime hours.

Activities vary throughout the summer but typically include team games, sports, arts and crafts, playground activities, and other recreation designed to encourage physical activity, creativity, cooperation, and neighborhood connections. The emphasis is less on competition than on providing children with a welcoming environment where they can stay active, socialize, and enjoy the outdoors under the guidance of trained recreation staff.
Because every session is held outdoors, weather can affect daily operations. The City encourages parents and guardians to monitor the Coon Rapids Parks and Recreation Facebook page for same-day rain cancellations, weather-related changes, or announcements regarding temporary pop-up locations.
The program reflects a broader effort by the City to invest in neighborhood-based recreation and to ensure that children have accessible opportunities for healthy, supervised activities during the summer break. By bringing programming directly into local parks, Coon Rapids reduces financial and logistical barriers while strengthening community connections in the neighborhoods where families live.
