MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | RevSports Returns to Coon Rapids With Summer Sports Programs Designed for Young Athletes

COON RAPIDS, MN.  Families looking to introduce their young children to organized athletics have another opportunity this summer as the City of Coon Rapids opens registration for its next session of RevSports instructional programs, offering four weeks of age-appropriate training in flag football, soccer, baseball, and volleyball.

The upcoming session begins Tuesday, July 14, and Wednesday, July 15, with registration remaining open until Friday, July 10, at 12 p.m., according to the City of Coon Rapids Parks and Recreation Department. The programs are open to boys and girls between the ages of 2 and 9 and are designed to emphasize skill development, confidence, physical literacy, and sportsmanship rather than competition.

RevSports, short for Revolutionary Sports, partners with municipalities throughout the Twin Cities to provide introductory athletic instruction for young children. In Coon Rapids, the organization works alongside the city's Parks and Recreation Department to deliver programming tailored to the developmental stages of early childhood and elementary-age participants.

Unlike competitive youth leagues that focus on game outcomes and standings, RevSports centers its curriculum on teaching fundamental athletic skills through structured play, interactive drills, and small-group instruction. The approach allows children to build confidence while learning the mechanics of each sport in an environment designed to reduce pressure and encourage participation.

Each session consists of four weekly classes, giving participants an opportunity to progressively develop new skills while becoming comfortable with organized athletics and teamwork.

The summer offerings include four popular sports, each divided into age-specific instructional groups.

Flag football, available for children ages 3 through 9, introduces participants to ball carrying, passing mechanics, catching, defensive positioning, and the fundamentals of flag pulling in a non-contact environment.

Soccer programs serve children ages 2 through 9, focusing on dribbling, passing, kicking accuracy, foot-eye coordination, balance, and overall body control through age-appropriate activities.

Baseball instruction is designed for children ages 2 through 6 and teaches batting fundamentals, throwing mechanics, catching, base running, and tracking moving balls while emphasizing proper technique over competition.

Volleyball, available for participants ages 5 through 9, introduces serving, passing, setting, ball tracking, movement, and basic court awareness through simplified drills appropriate for younger athletes.

To accommodate varying developmental milestones, RevSports organizes participants into several instructional tiers.

Children ages 2 to 3 participate in parent-and-child classes, where a parent or guardian joins each session to help reinforce movement patterns, listening skills, and introductory sports concepts. These classes emphasize coordination, balance, and comfort participating in structured physical activities.

As children grow more independent, the Mites and Tots divisions, generally serving ages 3 to 5, transition participants toward following coach instruction, practicing basic sport-specific techniques, and engaging with peers without direct parental involvement.

Older participants between 5 and 9 years old enter the Kinder and Youth divisions, where instruction becomes increasingly structured. Coaches begin introducing simplified game rules, positional awareness, footwork, technical execution, and supervised scrimmages that allow children to apply newly learned skills in game-like settings.

City officials describe the programming as an opportunity for children to experience multiple sports before families commit to long-term recreational leagues or traveling athletic programs.

The emphasis on foundational movement reflects a growing recognition among youth sports organizations that early childhood participation should prioritize overall physical literacy rather than early specialization. Organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics and national youth sports associations have encouraged communities to expose children to a variety of athletic activities during their formative years, noting that diversified participation can support motor development, reduce overuse injuries, and promote long-term enjoyment of physical activity.

RevSports' instructional model aligns with those recommendations by introducing children to multiple sports while emphasizing enjoyment, teamwork, communication, and confidence-building.

All instructional equipment needed for the introductory classes is provided through the program. Participants are asked to arrive dressed in comfortable athletic clothing and wear appropriate athletic shoes or sneakers. Parent-participation classes require a parent or guardian to remain actively engaged with their child throughout each session.

Registration is available exclusively through the City of Coon Rapids Parks and Recreation's ActiveNet online registration system. Because enrollment is organized by age group and individual class capacities, families are encouraged to register before the noon deadline to secure a spot in their preferred program.

RevSports is one of numerous youth recreation opportunities offered through the City of Coon Rapids Parks and Recreation Department, which provides year-round programming intended to encourage healthy lifestyles, skill development, and community engagement for residents of all ages.

For many families, the four-week summer sessions offer more than an introduction to athletics. They provide young children with an opportunity to build confidence, develop friendships, practice teamwork, and discover interests that may shape future participation in community recreation and organized sports.

Registration and additional program information are available through the City of Coon Rapids Parks and Recreation online registration portal.
