MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Columbia Heights Invites Families to Help Shape New Sullivan Lake Park Playground
COLUMBIA HEIGHTS, MN (July 11, 2026) Columbia Heights residents will have another opportunity Tuesday to help determine how a new playground at Sullivan Lake Park should serve children and families across different ages and abilities.
The city will hold a public design meeting from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at the Murzyn Hall Senior Center, 530 Mill Street NE. Residents will be able to examine an updated playground concept and provide feedback on play equipment, accessibility, seating, natural features, and the overall layout.
City employees will display several views of the proposed design and answer questions. Public comments will be considered before Columbia Heights selects equipment and moves into the installation phase.
The meeting marks another step in a park-renovation process that began in 2025 and has included the removal of the former playground and tennis courts, construction of a free outdoor fitness facility, public meetings, and multiple community surveys.
Playground Replacement Part of Larger Renovation
The previous playground and tennis courts were removed in July 2025. A Fitness Court Studio was constructed later that summer and formally opened during a September ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The outdoor facility was supported through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and the National Fitness Campaign. It provides residents with free access to exercise stations and space for individual and group workouts.
Replacing the playground is one component of a broader plan for Sullivan Lake Park. The city is also coordinating utility and infrastructure work that could affect the sequence and timing of construction.
In a May project update, Columbia Heights said the park’s separate improvements must be planned together to ensure long-term safety, sustainability, and responsible use of public resources.
The city said its goal is to create an accessible and inclusive play area with shaded seating, natural features, and equipment serving a wide range of ages and abilities.
Completion is currently anticipated in late 2026 or early 2027. The schedule may depend on final design decisions, equipment availability, utility coordination, and installation conditions.
Accessibility Among the Central Questions
Accessibility will be one of the subjects residents may address at Tuesday’s meeting.
An accessible playground requires more than providing a route into the site. Its surfacing, entrances, transfer points, equipment, seating, sensory environment, and internal circulation can determine whether children with disabilities can participate meaningfully once they arrive.
Families may consider whether the design offers ground-level activities, supportive swings, sensory play, quiet areas, accessible climbing features, clear sightlines, and routes suitable for wheelchairs and other mobility devices.
The needs of parents, grandparents, and caregivers with disabilities are also relevant. Seating, shade, proximity to play areas, and accessible pathways can determine whether adults can supervise and participate comfortably.
The city has not announced the final equipment package, which is why the current feedback period could be consequential.
Residents Have Participated Throughout the Process
Columbia Heights held an open house for the Sullivan Lake Park master plan in September 2025 and conducted an online survey during October and November. A second survey was available in January 2026, followed by a design open house January 7.
Tuesday’s meeting will allow residents to respond to a more developed concept before the city moves ahead with equipment selection.
People who cannot attend will receive another opportunity to comment online. The city said details about that process will be released separately.
The Sullivan Lake Park project is unfolding as Columbia Heights develops a broader 10-year Parks and Recreation System Plan. That citywide effort is examining parks, trails, recreation facilities, accessibility, sustainability, natural spaces, and connections among community amenities.
Feedback from residents will be combined with a professional analysis of the existing park system to establish future priorities.
