MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Minnesota Orders Flags Lowered to Honor Firefighters Killed in the Line of Duty

SAINT PAUL, MN (September 27, 2026). The statewide observance recognizes firefighters whose service ended in death and the families and departments that continue carrying their loss.

Gov. Tim Walz has ordered United States and Minnesota flags at state buildings to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Sunday in recognition of Minnesota Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day.

The order honors firefighters who died while protecting communities across Minnesota. It also recognizes surviving family members, fellow firefighters and departments affected by line-of-duty deaths.

Firefighters respond not only to structure fires but also to vehicle crashes, medical emergencies, hazardous-material incidents, water rescues, severe-weather events and wildfires. Many Minnesota departments depend heavily on volunteers who balance emergency service with employment and family responsibilities.

Line-of-duty deaths can result from immediate injuries or medical emergencies connected to response work. Firefighters can also experience occupational illnesses associated with repeated exposure to smoke, chemicals and other hazardous substances.

The half-staff order applies to state buildings. Local governments, businesses and residents may participate voluntarily in the observance.

Memorial recognition also calls attention to the continuing needs of surviving families. Benefits, mental-health support, workplace protections and long-term recognition can remain important long after a public funeral or memorial ceremony concludes.

Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day provides a statewide moment of remembrance for public servants whose work routinely places them in dangerous and unpredictable conditions. The observance also reminds Minnesota that supporting firefighters includes protecting those still serving and caring for the families of those who did not return home.
