Inmate Dies After Being Found Unresponsive In Mille Lacs County Jail

An investigation into the 57-year-old's death is now underway.

An investigation is underway following the death of a Mille Lacs County jail inmate.

According to a news release from the Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office, the 57-year-old man, identified as a Robert James Sam of Onamia, was found unresponsive Friday:

After the staff's "immediate efforts" to render aid, the inmate was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The sheriff's office says Sam had turned himself in on an outstanding warrant two days prior, but did not specify why the warrant was issued.

Cause of death is pending the results of a toxicology report, while the sheriff's office says it's conducting a "comprehensive investigation" into the circumstances of Sam's death.

"The Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office is committed to the safety and well-being of all individuals in our care," the release adds. "We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Sam during this difficult time."
