YMCA Of The North Announces Layoffs Affecting 69 Employees

The organization cited declining membership and other challenges.

Citing declining membership and other challenges, the YMCA of the North recently laid off 69 of its employees.

On Friday, the organization confirmed that it had laid off 59 full-time and 10 part-time employees. The layoffs affect around 1.8% of the YMCA's total staff.

Michelle Edgerton, executive vice president of advancement, told the Minnesota Star Tribune that while membership numbers are increasing, they’re down to 54,000 compared to 82,000 at the start of the COVID pandemic, while it ran a $10 million deficit in 2023.

"We are prioritizing and adjusting to meet the changing needs of our communities," said Glen Gunderson, president and CEO of YMCA of the North, in a statement.

"This includes a reduction in force across our organization, totaling approximately 1.8% of our full-time and part-time workforce. We value the contributions of team members being impacted and are providing them with transition support."

The post-pandemic landscape has been difficult for not just the YMCA but also the YWCA Minneapolis, which last year closed its downtown and Uptown Minneapolis locations as part of a post-COVID restructuring. The closures resulted in 85 employees being laid off.
