After String of Car Thefts, Maple Grove Police Remind Neighbors To Lock Doors

After a number of thefts from vehicles in a Maple Grove neighborhood, police are reminding neighbors to lock up.

Last Monday, Oct. 14, a number of cars had items stolen from them overnight in the 101st Ave N and Valley Forge Ln area of Maple Grove.

One resident said her license was taken from her vehicle and someone else had a case of pop stolen from theirs. She asked CCX News to remain unnamed for privacy and said this had never happened in the four years she has lived there.

Police say none of the reported thefts were forced entries. Maple Grove police Cmdr. Jon Wetternach asks neighbors to do their best to prevent those crimes before they happen.

“They were all unlocked vehicles, so it was an easy opportunity for these perpetrators to take the items,” Wetternach said. “That’s one thing we ask residents to do, is keep their cars locked if their parked outside. Keep their valuables out of sight in the cars, and then to close garage doors even if they are home. So it takes away that opportunity for them to be a target of these crimes.”

The case is still under investigation, but police say they’ve identified a potential suspect.

Overall in Maple Grove, Wetternach said that car thefts and thefts from motor vehicles are down this year. He said he credits much of that success to community outreach and education.
